Cancellation of Virginmedia Contract

Cancellation of Virginmedia Contract - TV/Broadband/Phone
It appears in my case that my best option is to cancel all my services 30 days before my contract (minimum period) ends.

''The early disconnection fee will not be more than the charges you would have paid for your chosen services for the remainder of the minimum period less any costs we save, including the cost of no longer providing you with those services''

- Does anyone know of any downside for cancelling whilst in contract with Virginmedia - If I wait until the end of minimum period, I still have to give 30 days notice and make further payments.

I've already got a Sky Phone & Broadband package at home - a good deal from moneysavingexpert.com back in July - Line Rental (New Line installed)Broadband for a cost of £5 for a year plus £6.95 router p&p - more than happy with my 8.7 Mbps download speed & 1Mbps upload speed & freeview TV for the future.

Re: Cancellation of Virginmedia Contract

It has been established in a court case a few years back, that a company cannot make you wait until the end of your minimum contract period before takng your instructions to cancel. If they do this, they are effectively extending your minimum contract by a month.

You can give notice to cancel as soon as you like, once you get within 30 days of the end of your minimum term. As long as the termination date falls outside your minimum period, you're fine. If the CSR on the phone tells you any different, then he/she is wrong. I think by now this should have filtered right through the organisation, as the legal hoohah was a few years ago now.

Re: Cancellation of Virginmedia Contract

Thank's Chris - that answers my question - I was just doing some forward planning - getting the facts together first before my phone call, next year.

AIUI the 30 days notice you are required to give is the minimum notice required for penalty-free termination. It is not an exactly 30 days or maximum 30 days requirement so you should be able to provide notice at any point >= 30 days from the proposed date of termination, even on the first day of the contract if you so choose. Whether VM's IT systems can handle it is another matter.

Re: Cancellation of Virginmedia Contract

I thought that might be the case, but given the possibility of some ill-informed CSR trying to impose an early cancellation penalty, if the phone call is made well ahead of the end of the minimum term, I though it might be better to just keep it simple.
