V+ Timeshifted viewing

Just a quick poll to see how many people still watch TV as it's broadcast and how many record their shows, or use catch up TV, to watch at their own convenience.

I'm not talking about live news channels or live sport, which the majority of people will always watch live, I'm talking about your run of the mill TV programs and shows.

Surprised that only 12% of all viewing is time-shifted especially when 64% of households have a DVR. How many SKY, Virgin, BT and Talk Talk customers are paying for PVR functionality but aren't using it? Crazy.

I very rarely watch any live TV, or even use my Tivo. I just recently downgraded from XL to M and removed multi room.

Watching TV is now through the following services:

Amazon Instant Streaming
Netflix
Now TV

Music is done through a subscription to Google Play Music.

I use a combination of Fire TV and Chromcast and a nexus Player in the bedroom.

I usually watch football live if i'm in but almost everything else gets recorded, not that there is much else I watch via VM tbh.

More people are doing this. I think it's appealing for those on a budget, I'm not suggesting you are by the way

I've said this before but Amazon Instant, Netflix and NOW TV are very appealing to me as you can front load all 3 services, if you have the money available, and paying nothing else throughout the rest of the year. £79.00 for Amazon Instant for the year, £51.00 for NOW TV if you shop around and Netflix for £75.00 if you buy their gift cards from Argos or Morrisons. £205 up front for a full years entertainment from all 3 services.

A lot of my favourite programmes clash with others I like, so it's all time-shifted for me these days.

I wouldn't say I am on a budget but reducing my cable package cost certainly did factor in to it. The only one I have front loaded is Amazon not sure I would do it with all of them seeing as you can cancel and restart your sub very easily. I switched to these services because they have more content that I prefer.

We never watch TV as it is broadcast any more, apart from some live events, the Labour leadership result yesterday being an example.

We watch from our Tivo recordings, Netflix, Amazon, Now TV and the BBC i-player almost exclusively and we do not watch commercials at all.

I know that Sky and ITV need the ads to pay their way, but most of the time you can lose up to one third of the programme with the number of ads shown, so I tend to record most of what I like to enable me to fast forward through them.

Well you don't really loose any of the program. It just means that a 45 min show lasts for about an hour because of the adverts padding it out.

Quite so. And with an ever increasing number of people doing the same, it does make you wonder what the broadcast channels are going to do about this reduction in audience figures, which will impact on advertising revenue.

I'd be very interested in what forum members would perceive happening if this income stream started diminishing.

Regular contributors on this forum know what I think!

Live sport - everything else is recorded or streamed. I like to binge watch series so I record the ones that interest me plus I have Sky box sets, Netflix & Prime.

Did the same 18 months ago and use the same streaming services as you, plus a couple of others.

However I still use the Tivo to record basic Freeview channels such as BBC and ITV etc. and make use of Tivo's Whishlist functionality.

I never watch shows live.
