account confusion

Would someone please be ableto help me.

I have a vista destop and an ageing vista laptop.
The problem that I have just noticed is the advanced (POP3) setiings are different in each account.

Desktop settings are:-

Outgoing mail (SMTP) port 25
Incoming mail (POP3) port 110

'This server requires a secure connection (SSL)' is not ticked

Laptop settings are:-

Outgoing mail (SMTP) port465
Incoming mail (POP3 port 995

'This server requires a secure connection (SSL)' is ticked

I have looked at an item on settings for ntlworld.com POP mail and would like to know if I should change desktop settings to same as laptop or leave both as they are.

I have not had any problems, with email, on either pc until today, (can't access webmail), but I believe these are related to new system and will hopefully be resolved soon.

Any help would be appreciated

Thank you

Re: account confusion

Both settings will work when you're on the Virgin Media home broadband network. However the settings on the laptop are required if you want to use email when not at home.

So unless you have a reason to reset your email client - for instance when you get a new desktop machine, you can leave them as they are.

Re: account confusion

Thank you Ben

I have just purchased, today, a new laptop running windows 10, but will still use old laptop until I get used to new one. So do I still leave settings as you advised earlier this morning.

Thank you.

Also having problems with this forum remembering my password, I may have to set new profile.

Re: account confusion

Yes, for the laptop you need to be using the secure settings as you've got configured on your existing laptop.

One thing to ensure is the 'Leave Messages on Server' setting is set as you wish on your new laptop. Although the new email platform is current ignoring this setting, it won't forever, so if it's not set as you wish you may find that emails aren't downloaded as you're expecting.
