Big dish in redditch

Going to Redditch yesterday I saw a massive Satellite dish on the Ravensbank Drive where it meets the Coventry highway.

Any ideas what this is for

Re: Big dish in redditch

No idea, but as a kid I was always fascinated by the BBC's Radio 4 masts in Droitwich, which I used to see regularly when going to see my grandparents in Bromsgrove. Even now, whenever I see them, it reminds me of my childhood.

Re: Big dish in redditch

I went on holiday in Bude (Cornwall) a few years back, and about half a mile up the coast, there were a whole load of satellite dishes (10 of them), ranging from 3 metres to 20 metres. We stopped, my friend sat there happily taking photos (it *was* an impressive site), then we noticed the GCHQ signs...

Yes, apparently there's some sort of GCHQ installation there. I'm sure anyone who has been in Gloucester would not have failed to notice the big donut sitting in a field - that's the GCHQ building.

The big dishes which you refer to are probably part of BT's teleport installation which I believe links the UK to America.

Having stood next to some of the dishes that ntl use to receive TV signals, I have to agree that they can be pretty impressive things.

Re: Big dish in redditch

I've stood next to some of the dishes used to upload to satellite - now that's impressive.

It could be an old tech's tales, but I was told that if you throw a cold Big Mac up infront of an uplink dish it comes back down piping hot!
