Best firewall

Looking for a program that does both anti virus and firewall protection together. Only criteria is that it MUST be free software.

Re: Best firewall

I use Comodo, firewall only, but it's free and does the job.

Re: Best firewall

Thanks, will look at Comodo. Only asking as I was relying on just Windows defender, but during a scan by another program it said to install a firewall and an AV program.

Re: Best firewall

Just turn on Windows firewall and use a good anti-virus. The firewall on windows is every bit as good as most third party ones nowadays, it's just doesn't annoy you with unnecessary messages all the time about what it's doing like others do to make themselves seem better.

For home use?

Windows Firewall / Microsoft Security Essentials

Windows Firewall Control (WFC) utility : http://www.binisoft.org/wfc.php for a convenient path to firewall settings that lives the systray.

Re: Best firewall

MSE is not sufficient protection, MS have stated that, if you want a free AV, AVAST seems to be the best at the moment

Use in conjunction with Ghostery and C Cleaner also helps.

There isn't a single Antivirus product which offers sufficient protection.

Re: Best firewall

I suspect there isn't an MS link to it, because the article reads like it was one person who let their mouth run away them during an interview with the press. The article even includes an update from MS. Every reference I can find to this all points back to this one article.

If you look at the MSE webpage then it says it's built on the same technology as MS charge businesses for and if you look at the VB100 test results then MSE/MS System Centre Endpoint Protection do pass the tests.

I'm not going to argue which product is or is not the best, but MS are not saying that MSE isn't sufficient. Though I tend to agree with Uncle Peter above who says that no single AV product provides sufficient protection.

I've read through that article and no where does it say that MSE is not sufficient protection. Quite the contrary, they are aiming to ensure ALL users of windows are sufficiently protected, even those who don't go for a third party solution.

What they do say is they are actively working to test and improve security in their products and sharing the results of that testing with the various companies providing 3rd party protection (such as Anti virus and Anti Malware), rather than working to build the best anti virus and anti malware solution themselves.
