BT reduces call clearing time to beat fraudsters
BT has announced it is drasticly cutting the call clearing time (the time it takes for a line to clear a call if the receiving party hangs up). In the past, fraudsters have been able to fool people into thinking they are talking to their bank etc, by not hanging up after making a call.

Re: BT reduces call clearing time to beat fraudsters
They should have done this as soon as the scam became known.
Cutting the time from 2-3 minutes, to 10 seconds, is an enormous change and you have to wonder why it was ever that long in the first place.

Re: BT reduces call clearing time to beat fraudsters
I've always wondered why that time was there at all, since we're all used to it being instant on mobiles.

Re: BT reduces call clearing time to beat fraudsters
I have asked if VM are going to implement something similar, as they have a separate telephone system. They are apparently looking into it:

Re: BT reduces call clearing time to beat fraudsters
The reason it was there in the first place was so, in the old days, if you answered a phone on one extension and needed to nip upstairs to refer to something there, you can put down the phone, go upstairs then pick up the extension and the call would still be connected - this still works, but not on modern wireless phones!

Re: BT reduces call clearing time to beat fraudsters
Well you can try this.
Our phone rang and we had a voice message telling us we had one a holiday, we hung up then pick the phone up and the message was still going, so we rapidly hung up answered a few time and the line cleared.

That's not clearing the line, that probably just put it into 3 way call mode.

Re: BT reduces call clearing time to beat fraudsters
i've been in contact with the police lately over calls like this.
I have had 3 telephone calls from a company insisting that a motobility car on my dads name that went back 12 years ago is in my possession and has been involved in an accident and left the scene of the accident without reporting it.
I have explained to them 3 times the car is not in my name, has never been in my name but it is still on the road as i have seen it a few times parked up around Swansea as i know the reg number of the car and the make and model which is a Ford Focus CL 1.4i on a 02 plate.
Police are looking into it now thankfully.
