powerline

I have devolo 200s. I get around 60meg on them. Will I get much more on 500s? The ones I'm looking at have 10/100 ether net ports so hoping they max out at 95 meg.

Re: powerline

which ones do you have

http://www.devolo.co.uk/consumer/dla...mbit.html?l=en

?

I've always been told it all depends on your circuit quality. Those plugs should at least do 100, the rate you're looking for so upgrading may be a waste of time. Try upgrading the firmware.

I'm thinking if I get 40% of 200 I might get 40% of 500. Google isn't much help. I'm tempted to just try as 500s are £25 on amazon

Re: powerline

Have you tried updating the firmware & software?

Google results bring in...

Quote:
In terms of performance we ran some throughput tests and noted an average speed of 60Mbps. This did fluctuate slightly (no more than a few percent either way) depending on the location of the destination computer, which could be down to the distance data had to travel across the powerlines. It's stable and consistent enough to get a thumbs up here, but doesn't really push any boundaries when compared to similar devices from rivals. Out of interest we also streamed HD 1080p video and saw flawless performance, with no discernable difference compared to a direct network connection.

http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/...lan-200-avplus
yet its down as 200 ? A bit misleading or does the 200 only apply to a super quality circuit ?

Re: powerline

I believe 200 = 100 upload 100 download - overheads - wiring = 60meg. I'll have a read of that link

Re: powerline

I don't know where potato came from.

As for powerlines - never used them myself, but my understanding of the technology is they're similar to wifi in many ways.

For one - the quoting of speeds. It's a TDD (i.e. not full duplex) system, and has lots of overheads. Same as when we had 54Mbps wifi and you'd get maybe 20Mbps, when they quoted 108Mbps you'd get maybe 30-40Mbps. The rating on the homeplugs is meant to be comparable to these earlier wifi standards.

You're sorta right in thinking if you get 40% of 200 you'll get 40% of 500. Of course the higher speeds depend on better quality wiring and there's losses as a result of diminishing returns, 20-30% of 500 is more likely - about 100-150Mbps.

Again remembering it's half duplex though so with 100Mbps ethernet ports you're looking at maximum download speeds of 100Mbps under good conditions, but you're also able to get 100 down, 50 up, or 75 down 75 up depending what you're doing, which is quite an improvement over the 60 you're getting now which might drop to 30 down 30 up if things get busy both ways.

Re: powerline

What electric wiring setups don't work with Powerline?

All my wiring goes to the fuse box and the left & right sockets are on different fuses, as are the up stairs and down stairs lights.

That should work. Its whether the circuits are on different units.

Re: powerline

I have powerlines on different circuits, they work fine. The only occasion you have problems is on a three phase supply where they have to be on the same phase
