House with VMNG300 AND Superhub?!

Hi,

I've just moved into a shared house with people who have 120Mb Virgin, only I'm really confused about their setup. They have the standard white Virgin box thing on the wall, but this is then plugged into something like this: http://www.tektica.com/triax-2-way-f...-2-349802.html which then has one white cable (not sure what they're called, aerial cables or something?) going into a VMNG300 and another one going into a Superhub v1. There is also an ethernet cable going between the 2. Then one ethernet cable going from the superhub to one of those powerline ethernet adapters, I think, but I'm not sure where it goes after.

I've connected directly into the Superhub, and the internet is really weird. While really fast every time I do a speedtest, a lot of websites load really slowly or not at all. My server also can't configure it's VPN properly and keep complaining about lack of internet access.

(The websites that load really slowly or not at all include Virginmedia.com, Microsoft.com and Reddit.)

What sort of setup is this?!

Thanks.

Re: House with VMNG300 AND Superhub?!

What are the lights on both the Ambit 300 and Superhub doing?

It is actually possible they're both live devices, I have a spare "live" superhub 1 from the trial I was on years ago (for some reason it's still active) that I can plug in at the same time as my other Modem - but I highly doubt this is the case, plugging an ethernet cable between the two is only going to cause issues (and probably why your internet is screwy).

Turn off the Ambit 300 and see what happens.

yeah, I very much doubt somebody would use the ambit as the modem and the shub solely for routing purposes

If its a shared house maybe the bedrooms are registered seperately and they do have two accounts?

In that case the only way they should be physically connected is via a device that can handle dual WAN's. The Superhub is certainly not going to play nicely with another connection plugged directly into it (as we know, it can barely manage bog standard networking) :p

Re: House with VMNG300 AND Superhub?!

that is what I was thinking. I am actually fascinated now, I want to know what the shub sees as its gateway, its own coax connection or the link coming in over port 1 from the ambit? If it uses any sort of metrics I imagine its own internal link is set to take priority. Very interesting though.

Re: House with VMNG300 AND Superhub?!

I have a VMNG300 sat in my hand but when I plug it in I get nothing.. So lucky them!. I don't like my SH or wireless and I only use 1 Ethernet port anyway so I wish I could use this one.
