Using a personal DTR with a V HD box.

Just a quick question -

I have a Virgin TV XL package which i am finding a bit expensive as I have recently downsized my job. What I would like to know is that if I downgraded my current package to include a V HD box in place of my Tivo box and bought my own Digital Television Recorder would I be able to connect it, pick up the channels and record from the V HD box or does it only work with freeview channels?

I would appreciate any help.
Thanks.

It would only work with Freeview channels, you might be able to record the Virgin channel you are watching but that would only be of use when you're out.

I have no trouble recording anything off my VHD box including all sky channels.

I assume it wouldn't have SCART or RCA inputs, though DTR rather than DVR probably makes me wrong. Regardless, the 'channel you're already watching' point still stands.

As an addendum to my previous question, would you need an external aerial to be able to use any digital television recorders? Obviously with the Tivo you don't because I don't have an external aerial and I get all the channels that Virgin offer. I gather that you can't pick up freeview channels without one Is that right?

Correct Have one connected to Freeview TV as a back up

Re: Using a personal DTR with a V HD box.

The other alternative to a DTR is to buy a DVD recorder or combined HDD/DVD recorder. The majority of these have Scart inputs that will record from a VHD. It's what I used to use before I had the V+, and still use to archive programmes. These have Freeview (some have Freesat) built in, so you can record Freeview/Freesat while you watch a cable channel, and if you have a Freeview tuner on the TV, vice-versa.

Indeed this is what I do with my Panasonic DVD/HDD recorder.
