PAT or Port Address Translation
Hi i cant believe this hasn't been asked already but my search hasn't found it.
I need to PAT on my virgin superhub so i can hide my internal web server from snoopers!
i want to http in to my house on port 12345 and have the hub translate it to my internal server (192.168.0.10) on port 80.
I've always been able to do this on my dsl with either a netgear or a cisco router but cant see the option on the "superhub"
i can see the NAT setup but no option for PAT.
is this possible with this hub??

You mean http://192.168.100.1/VmRgPortForwarding.asp doesn't do it for you?

Re: PAT or Port Address Translation
no that is port forwarding NOT port translation.
with that i send a packet with address www.myhouse.com and port 80 and it will FORWARD it to address myinternallan on port 80.
i want to send a packet to www.myhouse.com port 12345 and have the router TRANSLATE it to myinternallan port 80.
this is a pretty well used and documented requirement, which is why i find it odd that the "superhub" doesnt provide it - if thats the case. I know the hub is a netgear router in essence (with modem built in) and i know this is available on netgear routers. so i am wondering if i simply cant see it, or if it can be confirmed that it isn't available.

That option is not even on my DDWRT router, i have never seen it on the super hub, however i cannot check mine as i always use it in modem mode.

Not that it helps the OP, it is on DDWRT and on most other routers (in my experience).
PAT is a subset of NAT and generally configured in the same way - Specify an incoming port and protocol(s) (TCP, UDP or both) and specify the destination LAN address. If you, optionally, specify a destination port then you'll PAT rather than NAT.
It does seem that the SH doesn't provide this however...

nope, the shub is a basic bottom of the range excuse for a router and only has minimal features to cater for the majority of residential run-of-the-mill users

Re: PAT or Port Address Translation
It's not really something the average home user needs to be honest.

I know, I feel like a right plank as well because I have just checked my Linksys router which I am always praising and I can't do PAT on it either

Can you not enter an external port and internal port in the Port Forwarding section?

Re: PAT or Port Address Translation
yup, it is alright now, I know what he wants to do. I forgot about the ports and I got it into my head that he wanted to map an external ip to an internal one and I was mardy that my router wouldnt do it.

Re: PAT or Port Address Translation
@OP What's your web server running? have you thought about the possibility of using mod_proxy?

Re: PAT or Port Address Translation
hi thanks for your reply.
I'm actually not running a web server. i just wanted to keep my example as simple as possible.
the app i use doesnt allow me to choose its listening port. so i'm resigned to allowing it through on its default port and restricting access based on IP (a drag) or buying a "proper" router which allows PAT. Most do.
Trouble is i have to keep the Shub as it contains the modem so i'm adding a layer of complexity i dont (or shouldnt) need.

Re: PAT or Port Address Translation
A bit late now, but it can be done with Tomato firmware as well.
