Now this really is taking the P....
Downloading headers from VM's newsgroup servers.
I've never seen it this low, and it's been like it all day so far..

The trouble is, I can't tell if it's Highwind's servers or VM putting the brakes on.

You can usually get free trials with the big new group providers, so that might help you find out if its VM braking your speed or if its the VM newsgroup. I usually get pretty good speed from the VM news group altho not used it for a few days now.

it is VM dude. I have done many a test before and as soon as you hit the time periods for peak time traffic shaping the speed dies down to literally nothing which is completely unneccessary. The fact that I can easily 4mb/sec off torrents which is also supposed to be low priority means that the bandwidth is there to be used.

Re: Now this really is taking the P....
A mate dropped in earlier, and using my PC and connection, tried to DL headers from the same groups as me but from his Giganews account. Same ultra slow result. Ditto with his laptop on our connection. He then called from home to say that he has full speed on his BT connection to Giganews.
So it is VM strangling the bandwidth.

Unison by Panic software.
It's not free, but it's well worth the $29 it costs, IMO.
As well as the normal downloading/browsing options, it also integrates Par checking (if the file has Pars), unarchiving, as well as offering the ability to search any newsgroup index site that can send NZBs.

Did he select SSL on port 443 for the giganews test on your connection, the reason i ask is because if i use that port i get full speed at any time of the day.
This is Giganews at 18.40 via SSL on port 443 = 11.8 MB/s

Re: Now this really is taking the P....
I don't think either of us us savvy enough to do something like that. We both just go with "standard settings".

Re: Now this really is taking the P....
Should just be a tick box to tick under server settings for your news program.

These are the instructions for giganews
http://www.giganews.com/usenet-ssl/setup.html
NOTE you cannot use port 443 on VM's server, however should you use a paid for service then this should help.
