Ariel cable for satellite connection

Hi,
I have moved into a new flat that has a communal ariel and satellite dish. The living room has 3 outlets, the main one includes connections for: Sat 1; Sat 2; TV; Return. The two remote outlets are for TV only.

The TV is at the opposite side of the room from the main socket, and to get a signal, a coax cable is connected between the 'TV' and 'Return' sockets in the main outlet, and another from a remote socket to the TV.

I thought I would get a satellite signal on my FREESAT TV with a similar setup, but using the 'Sat1' socket on the main outlet and the satellite connection on the TV - I don't

As expected, I do get a signal if I connect the 'Sat1' socket direct to the TV satellite connection with a long coax cable so why does it not work via the wall connections Please?

Regards,

Re: Ariel cable for satellite connection

The satellite connection will only work from the main baseplate. This is because satellite connections have to have a return path connection with the dish equipment. This connection is not available through the built-in extension wiring, which when installed was intended to provide an analogue output from an aerial and/or Sky box. The extension should be suitable to distribute Freeview, but not Freesat or Sky.

The only option, as you have found, is to attach an extension cable directly to the main baseplate.

Unhappy Re: Ariel cable for satellite connection

Thanks nodrogd. Being non-technical, what is different about a coax cable running across the floor and the same cable running behind a wall? is it to do with the difference between an ordinary push-in TV socket and the screwed satellite socket?

Re: Ariel cable for satellite connection

The cable in the wall may be standard TV coax and not Satellite coax. Also any amplifiers and splitters in the wiring will, 1) only cover terrestrail TV frequencies & 2) prevent any signals going in the "wrong" direction up the cable.

Satellite frequencies are way above terrestrial ones, and Freesat TV's/Boxes need to send a switching signal to the dish equipment at the other end.
