Deadly attack rocks central Liege in Belgium

A gun and grenade attack in the centre of the Belgian city of Liege has killed at least two people and wounded 47 including a toddler, media say.

Reports say one of the attackers is among the dead. Local media say another has been detained, while a third is involved in a stand-off with police.

Seven of them are in a serious condition, and doctors at a city hospital are trying to save the life of an 18-month-old boy injured in the attack.

14:38 Latest reports from the ground suggest that the total number of deaths has risen to four. It is not clear if an injured person has succumbed to their wounds or whether police are continuing to find new victims as they clear the area.

14:25 More from Le Soir - they've dug into their archive and found an article from three years ago in which Amrani, then aged 29 and from Liege, was sentenced to just under five years for possession of 12 guns and growing 2,800 cannabis plants.

14:14 Belgium's Le Soir newspaper has named one of the attackers as Nordine Amrani, a man they say was known to police. He was killed in the attacks.

Hopefully the death toll doesn't climb much higher. to the Belgian police, they seem to have dealt with the incident quickly and decisively.

Very sad to hear that the death toll looks to have risen to four but it seems this man was a ticking timebomb just waiting to explode.

The media seem pretty convinced there were between 3 and 4 attackers, not a lone mentalist scenario.

Hmmm, actually now at least one media outlet is saying there was only one person involved.

Are you sure we are reading the same bit as this is all l can see Derek unless l am blind as well as thick.

14:47 AFP, the news agency, is now reporting that there was only one gunman, quoting the town's public prosecutor, Daniel Reynders.

Police in Belgium have discovered a woman's body in a shed belonging to a gunman who went on the rampage in Liege, killing four people and himself.

The body found at the killer's property was that of a cleaner, reported to be 45 years old, who worked for one of Amrani's neighbours.

Also found in the shed were two weapons and a stockpile of ammunition, the public prosecutor, Daniele Reynders, told a news conference.
