Setting Series Links - New Only
I'm struggling to get my head around how TiVo handles series links a little.
Wifey wants to record "Come Dine With Me" at 8 PM every Friday. I have set the series link to "New Only" yet the box still wants to record 300+ episodes, from different series, channels and times of the day!
It does it with other shows too like "Wheeler Dealers". Let's assume the "Come Dine With Me" show on the Friday night is Series 30 Episode 7. Episode 8 is the following Friday at the same time and so on and so on. How do I get it just to record that series, in that order and ignore the other showings?
What am I missing?

Are you looking in Planned Recordings? If so then dont worry if you go to Recording Hiccups it will tell you they wont record as its not new only

Sounds like it's recording Suggestions too. These will have symbol next to them, while recordings have a (R)
TiVo will put them in the same folder for easy viewing.

OK, I'll have a closer look at this although I am not quite sure that is entirely my issue.
I'll give another example. On Sky+ I have the Gadget Show set to record at 4.05 AM on a Thursday morning. I set a series link and it records every week at 4.05 AM.
Obviously with VM I now have access to Demand 5 (which means I don't have to record it), but let's say I still want to, so I go into set a series link, new only, and come out.
The TiVo will record the first episode at 4.05 AM but then wants to record an episode on a Saturday morning, Monday evening and so on.
All I want it to do is record The Gadget Show at 4.05 AM on a Thursday morning every week and record zero episodes of it on any other day or at any other time.
How do I get it to do that?
Why is this a problem you may ask? Well, it's really just a minor annoyance in respect of the Gadget Show but I have also been trying to record things like Ross Kemp & Terra Nova on Sky1HD, but because of the TiVo's insistence in recording episodes I don't want or need I keep getting warned of "cropping" because (I assume), of the padding and the fact I have other stuff set to record around the same time.
So I end up cancelling the Series Link because I don't understand why it is looking to record stuff I don't want!
Surely it should only record this stuff if it is set to "New & re-runs"?

Re: Setting Series Links - New Only
TiVo will always record the 1st showing, if it clashes with a higher priority programme it will then look for a repeat. With 3 tuners it's rarely a problem, let TiVo worry about clashes and manage them for you.
Is it a new episode of The Gadget Show?

I have a series link for Terra Nova and it is set to "New Only" and it just records new episodes. If I look at "My Planned Recordings" and go through what is actually planned to record I do not see any repeats, just the expected once per week recording. I think (not sure about this) if you go into "Recording Hiccups" you will see Tivo looks at other repeat episides but then says it will not record it. A strange way of doing it but end result is you just get new recordings and Terra Nova works fine this way.
In fact I set all new series links to "new only" as the EPG seems reliable on this now. There is the odd series where I am getting repeat recordings but they tend to be on Watch e.g. my son records Ninja Warrior and Total Wipeout USA which have lots of repeats every week and sometimes the EPG data is not good enough for a "New Only" series link to avoid repeat recordings. But apart from those 2, I have a reliable recording schedule based on "New Only" setting for over 40 series links now.

Re: Setting Series Links - New Only
Thank you for the info (and PM's), I am taking it all on board and looking closely at what is planned to record and when.
I'm wondering if it's because the TiVo box is more intelligent that it looks like it is going to record stuff in the future that it actually won't, causing me to panic?
Perhaps I will have a clearer picture of what it will and won't do once it get's a full week of series linked recordings under it's belt.
I'm going to put Ross Kemp on to record on Sunday night although it warns me it will clip stuff on the Monday (the next new episode) as I already have Young Apprentice, Terra Nova and I'm a Celebrity down to record, just to see what happens.

Re: Setting Series Links - New Only
Is the gadget show a repeat of an old show or the previous Monday new episode? I have a series link set up for the new ep every Monday night at 8pm and that is all it ever records.

Re: Setting Series Links - New Only
A repeat of the Monday, as is the Saturday morning I think. The reason I record it on a Thursday is because I already have loads recording on the Monday night.

Re: Setting Series Links - New Only
Yep and this is where I will need to learn to adjust my thinking, a bit like I always recorded some shows at weird times of the day because I knew I only had two tuners!
I've just been trying the iPlayer in HD for the Young Apprentice and it looks stunning, just like the normal broadcast, so I have binned the series link.
I think it is just a case of me adjusting to the box (which is obviously clever), rather than trying to get it to do what I used to do, and remembering that I don't actually need to record everything!
