Question Does Show Type Everything record duplicates?

Reading media boy's TiVo review reminded me of something. He said New Only and New and Rerun options never record duplicates.

But what about the other Show Type option, Everything? Does it record literally all matches in the series link, or does it just record just one instance of every episode as soon as it can (which the recording hiccups "theres a show within next 28 days" message implies).

Re: Does Show Type Everything record duplicates?

I think it just records the 'prime' version of each episode. If you interrogate your planned recordings, it shows which are being recorded, and which are not.

Re: Does Show Type Everything record duplicates?

I looked at the upcoming epidodes and it doesn't record duplicates.

Ok, so can someone explain precisely what New Only, New and Reruns and Everything options do, and why you would use one over the other, as I can't see the difference between the latter two.

'Everything' records duplicates for me. What series are you trying?

(I can't imagine why you'd want duplicates recording, mind)

This from the US TiVo support site. (The terminology is different, but the idea is the same)

Quote:
* Selecting First Run Only records only first run programs. An episode is considered a first run if its first air date matches the current day. This means if an old program is being aired for the first time on a new channel, the DVR may consider it a first run.
* Selecting Repeat and First Run records all episodes that have specific program descriptions and that have not been recorded within the last 28 days. This is the default.
* Selecting All (with duplicates) records all episodes, including episodes that have been recorded within the last 28 days.

Re: Does Show Type Everything record duplicates?

Excellent, utterly confusing then, as that explanation contradicts what TiVo upcoming episodes is telling me.

I have had 4 programmed fail to record in the first showing and 2 of those were not repeated in the 28 days (see my other thread) so Everything might be the solution.

If not, TiVo is going back.

Re: Does Show Type Everything record duplicates?

I can confirm that Everything option does indeed record duplicates.

So is it acceptable for TiVo to not record the firs airing of a new episode, in favour of a rerun later in the month?

I have had this happen several times now and there is no apparent conflict on other tuners, TiVo just seems to have decided to postpone recording to a later date (and then fail to record the rerun because it ISNT rerun!)

This is either a bug or there's some decision making going on that we should be able to influence like giving priority to newly aired episodes, or priority to certain series you think are important.

Re: Does Show Type Everything record duplicates?

It seems odd. If you see the same happen again, please post details. (If you can spot it in Planned Recordings before it has recorded, that's even better)

Can you give an example of some series? I have a lot of season passes and haven't experienced this, if you can give some it might be possible to see where the problem is?
