Re Wiring basic Sky dish

Hi Peeps desperately need some help, kids on half term and had no Sky since Friday

Had some building work done about year ago and they managed to plaster and tile the white sky cable into the kitchen wall. Didnt think too much of it at the time but recently we bagan loosing the sky signal and would have to give the wire a shake to get it back. On thursday/friday I wasnt around and my boys gave it a shake and that was the end of the wire!!

Ive now drilled a whole from the upstairs bedroom right by the sky dish and attached a cable to the sky dish and fixed it to the back of the sky unit but still getting error message 29 that no signal is being received. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? I am using an old tv arial cable, brown in colour, but it has copper mesh and everything.

Sky want me to subscribe to another contract before they can help Last resort before I admit defeat and give them a call...

TV aerial cable is no good, too lossy, you need low loss satelite cable.

If all else fails, call sky, threaten to leave and they will normally send an engineer out FOC

Yeah wrong cable mate. Look on ebay you`ll find loads of it on sale and cheap too. Failing that ring sky and threaten to leave for virgin,they`ll send a guy round in no time,and fix it for free!

I havent been a Sky subscriber for couple of years, so they said they couldnt help unless I take out new contract; I didnt try and use the virgin media line...

Thank you for the Argos suggestion guys...Im gonna try a different type of cable and see what difference it makes......watch this space and thanks again for your help and advice!

Don't be tempted to buy cheap. You need satellite grade coaxial cable, look for CT100. Be extremely careful when fitting your f-connectors not to allow any of the outer copper braid to get near the inner wire. Use self-amalgamating tape to waterproof the connection between the f-connector and the LNB on the dish arm.

...and in conclusion I went B&Q bought a 25metre roll of co axial cable for £20. When i got back to the car there was Sky van parked along side me. I waited and when the guy returned had a quick chat, explained my situation and he kindly followed me home and installed a new cable running from dish to the unit!!

I had to pay little over the odd -I was hoping to get away with £10 but he asked for £20 so that was that!!

Aaahhhhh listen silence......boys sitting down eating there lunch watching My Parents Are Aliens...lol!!! This week off work hasnt been a total waste -I got the sky fixed.

Yyeessss......now to return cable to B&Q.
