OpenDNS Worth using?
Hi,
I was just wondering if OpenDNS is worth using?, I have absolutley no problems in browsing with the 50mb service nice and speedy and never a problem using Virgin's DNS server.. Will i feel any noticeable difference in speed by using opendns? or should i just stick to Virgin's own DNS?.

Re: OpenDNS Worth using?
I found the OpenDNS servers were faster, use Steve Gibson's freeware DNS Benchmark tool to test your speeds.
"Domain Name Speed Benchmark. Are your DNS nameservers impeding your Internet experience? A unique, comprehensive, accurate & free Windows (and Linux/Wine) utility to determine the exact performance of local and remote DNS nameservers" http://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm

Re: OpenDNS Worth using?
If you have kids there is an additional benefit of using OpenDNS.
You can set up your account for content management to block all sorts of questionable content from the little darlings

Re: OpenDNS Worth using?
I found OpenDNS to be slower than Virgin's DNS servers.
Additional services offered by OpenDNS such as URL shortcuts are nice but you need to run their dynamic IP address software for it to work consistently and reliably. Privacy is another issue.

Re: OpenDNS Worth using?
I also used the benchmark software and found that Open DNS was much slower than VM although it used to be the other way round!

Re: OpenDNS Worth using?
is fine, but I suggest registering and then disabling the auto redirect on failed lookups.
google dns is better tho in my opinion.

Re: OpenDNS Worth using?
I stopped using opendns when I found out they track your usage.

How did you 'find out'? They're very open and upfront about the fact that they sell aggregated web usage trends to marketing companies - that's how they fund the service and keep it free to the end user.

Re: OpenDNS Worth using?
According to Samknows, Virgin's DNS servers are actually some of the fastest around - so no benefit to switching.

Re: OpenDNS Worth using?
I've used OpenDNS for years without any problems and never noticed any issues with browsing or gaming, etc. I've never used Google's own, so might try Google's or revert to Virgin's for a while, just to try something different.
