Talking Unix Book, any recommendations?

Hi all,

I have been a software tester for many years but have just moved roles. i moved into our Web/Middleware team a lot of the role is unix based as i have always wanted to learn more about it.

I'm ok with unix but no expert i know how to cd, vi, grep etc... basic stuff.

Ok back to the question, found this book on Amazon, anyone know of anything better?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Unix-Nutshel...1228970&sr=8-1

Would this be ok, any other recommendations welcome (books, sites etc...)

Re: Unix Book, any recommendations?

The nutshell books are usually good as reference manuals, rather than teaching/learning guides. As the subtitle of that one says "A desktop quick reference guide"

which is how I use mine, it sits next to the pc, and I look things up when using the command line when "man command" isn't clear enough for me. But it's not the sort of book to work through.

There's plenty of guides on the internet, I've been looking at some of the guides at http://www.linuxhq.com/ recently. Linux not Unix, but unless you get into the real nitty gritty that may not matter.

this may help to

also, forgot to mention http://distrowatch.com/ if you don't know it. as well as Linux it covers BSD, and Solaris, and on the left they linkto a different guide which changes on each refresh. some are distro specific like Ubuntu, both others are guides to bash etc

more guides here:

Re: Unix Book, any recommendations?

Unix and Linux System Administration Handbook 4th Edition
by Evi Nemeth ; Garth Snyder ; Ben Whaley ; Trent R. Hein
(PRENTICE-HALL, Jul 2010, Paperback)

Essential System Administration 3rd Edition
by Aeleen Frisch
(O'REILLY & ASSOCIATES, Sep 2002, Paperback)

The latter is very readable.
