Wireless Speed With The Wireless N Router

Hi guys, hope you are all well.

Im on 50mb broadband but with my current wireless router (a 5 year old D Link) i only get a download speed of around 5mb when on wireless.

I am getting the Wireless N router delivered either tomorrow or Friday and i was just wondering what wireless speed i would expect to receive from it, if say i was sat in the same room?

Thanks

Re: Wireless Speed With The Wireless N Router

A wireless N router should be capable of delivering the full speed that a 50Mbps cable connection can deliver (~ 6MBps) under good conditions.

If your current router is plain 802.11g it couldn't deliver 5MBps. Although they are called 54Mbps devices that is shared up and down and in practice all they'll deliver is ~ 25Mbps ~ 3MBps. If you are getting a genuine 5MBps then your current router must be one of the "Super G" models advertised as 108Mbps.

If you are in the same room then running ethernet should be easy and that will definitely deliver the goods.

Re: Wireless Speed With The Wireless N Router

There's a thought. I'd assumed he'd be getting both. If he doesn't and the old router was a 108Mbps model then there would actually be a drop in speed because the N router would only fall back to G with any style of G dongle.

Re: Wireless Speed With The Wireless N Router

As the OP is on 50Mb already he should have a N adaptor. A free one is part of the package.

Re: Wireless Speed With The Wireless N Router

Engineer didn't give me wireless router or dongle, they are being sent through the post after speaking to the twitter team. My current download speed is about 500kbs not 5mb per second on my current router
