Help with router and IP address 86.xx
Hello, please help me, this is the 5th day i've spent trying to connect my wireless internet. It is a linksys one and i've been using their help pages. All the ethernet cables work, I've got the routers IP address, I've pinged it, etc etc. When i connect modem - router - PC i can't get the internet. The only problem i can find according to the help pages is that my PC's IP address and default gateway do not have the same first numbers (86.x.xxx.xxx) as my DNS(194.xxx.x.xxx). I've tried to change it using admin command prompt but I can't. Can anyone help me!!!??? Please???

Welcome to the forum.
Reset the router to defaults and set your ethernet card to aquire an address/DNS automatically. That's all you should have to do..
Router LAN config should then be as per the manual states

Ok, I think I understand the first two bits, have reset router, have made sure the computer automatically gets IP addresses.
Don't undertand last sentence!
THANK YOU for helping me!

In other words read the manual and it should tell you the default address for the router which you'll need to put into a web browser to configure it. It should also tell you the default username and password.

Re: Help with router and IP address 86.xx
I've got the router's IP address, the problem is that when i connect modem - router - PC with working ethernet cables and power up i cannot get any internet connection at all - even if i type the routers address in. As I said in first post, the only thing I can find which could be wrong according to the linksys helpsite is my computers IP address. Or the router is bust, but I've pinged it and it is there so is this likely?

Re: Help with router and IP address 86.xx
Which router address are you typing in??? I think the default on a linksys is 192.168.1.1 and your PC should get an address of 192.168.1.X with a DNS and GATEWAY of 192.168.1.1 (same as the router address). In a web browser typing in the default router address should get you to the router login http://192.168.1.1 (assuming still that that is the default address which should be also specified inthe manual)
The 86.X.X.X address is the outside address and you won't get anything on that address.

Re: Help with router and IP address 86.xx
What ip are you getting with it all connected up?
If you get 86xxxx when connected straight to modem then thats ok.can you browse the net just wired into modem?
What ip are you getting from router? run ipconfig and post back, also the exact error message when opening IE?
What is the status of your connection in network connections?
If you have a good IP address and it shows connected but IE cannot display the webpage and
If you have old Norton or Mcafee......get rid!
Also check in tools/internet options/connections/LAN settings and make sure you are not using a proxy settings.
If it's wireless check your network adapter in device manager-if it's Atheros....update the driver.
If you still cannot get anywhere PM me

Re: Help with router and IP address 86.xx
Have you powered off your modem after you change the connection from the pc to the router? Don't forget, the modem remembers the last hardware device connected to it, so you need to power off, connect the new device (router) and then power on the modem.
