Can anyone help me please?

I have just got the VGA lead to connect my laptop to my tv, I can connect not a problem that was simple but the problem I am now having is that I cannot get the feed from the laptop to fill the 42in plasma I have it just keeps on coming up in what I can only describe as pre widescreen picture, I have tried changing the screen resolution but this does not seem to help, I read that I have to change it to 1600 x 1200 but when I do this it comes up on the tv no signal.

Depends on what model of tv you have and also if it is full hd or not as in 1080p, if it is 1080p then the max resolution 1920x1080 so 1600x1200 would not work if however it is a 1080i tv then the max resolution is either 1366x768 or 1024x768 so again the 1600x1200 resolution would not work.

Best bet is what make and model is the tv and also the laptop, and is it a 15pin vga lead or not with that info someone may be able to help or i can look again when i finish work at 5pm.

Is the laptop actually capable of outputting widescreen?

The tv is a Hitatchi 42inch plasma model number P42H01U it is a 1080hd ready tv, my laptop is a Sony VGN-NR21J. Thanks for your help.

1024:1080 I imagine the grapics chip is where you are going to struggle will it allow something like 1024:600 or close to 600?

The manual states that you can only do the 1920x1080 (interlaced) with the HDMI input. The RGB input (the VGA) will only do a max of

1280 Ã— 720 60
1280 Ã— 768 60
1360 Ã— 768 60

While I have been messing about with the signal as it is on the TV, why cannot I get the internet screens on the TV, I can watch things on windows media player but cannot access things like facebook on TV, all very puzzling

Have you tried any of the resolutions I put in my last post as they are the only resolutions (apart from some lower ones) that will work with that TV

Yea I tried the resolutions you gave me kymmy (thank you) they was all very similar so I think I may just have to put up with the smaller screen and just be happy it is on the TV.

Yep I gave you the options as some video cards can;t do all of them so one at very least had to work. The full list is on page 41 of the manual and if you don't have one then try this link http://www.nodevice.com/user_manual/...v/p42h01u.html

OMG

I have managed to sort it. One of the things which I hate to admit was so obvious I just couldnt see it for looking, I will tell you though incase anyone else as thick as me is on here with the same question.

When I was looking at the TVs user manual (as Kymmy suggested) I noticed a section about screen ratios and like a thunderbolt it hit me it wasnt the laptop that was the problem I just needed to hit a button on the remote to get it to change it to 16.9 a moment which I am not proud of that one. As for the internet on the screen I figured out that I had to 'move' the items on to the tv and move my cursor until it was over on the tv and then I could surf on the TV screen. Thankfully I now have it figured out and can happily watch what I have saved on the laptop on the TV.
