0844 call charges (cheap international calls)

Virgin seem to be getting quite expensive for 0844(PG8) numbers, which my wife uses to talk to relatives in China.
when I last looked it was
7 p to connect and then 2 p per minute
now its
8.80P TP connect and then 3.96 p per minute.

bt are still 1p per minute.. not sure what it is to connect

wonder why there is such a difference..hmm.. looks like its time to give skype a go at 1.4p

yep thats where I got the

and I have just noticed the connection charge goes up to 9.79 in october.

admittedly I only checked after noticing my bill was a bit more than usual

I use Skype to call China Mobile...1.7p per minute, 3p per SMS.

A tenner goes a long way...

Is that link supposed to take me to their normal rates page or should it take me to somewhere I can type in a number and get the exact cost (maybe down at the moment due to new prices coming into effect tomorrow?) ?

Some 0844 xxx numbers are not listed on Virgins rates pages.

Ah thanks.

I thought you had to search for the 3 numbers after 0844, but I take it that if there isn't one, then I look for the 2 numbers instead.

Have you tried signing up to www.18185.co.uk and using their 0808 (Free) access number for non-BT callers, China is 2p/min using that. I suggest setting up Direct Debit rather than Credit Card billing as you have more control. I have used them for years with no issue.

There is a new skype diverter for personal landline and cell phone.
This adapter -Rylwy - can reduce a lot the telephone bill.
It connect your personal landline and cell phone to the net via skype , then you remote access them anywhere with skype again. in the uk you can use your bt 5.95 free mounth contract - via your "3" cell phone for free - so not paying anything calling landline from your cell phone !

First Telecom Cable Saver package is free and pretty cheap on international calls. And pretty much all calls compared to some of the extortionate rates on Virgin's basic phone package.

That doesn't really help from a Virgin land line though, as you still have to dial an 0844 number, which from virgin is a fortune..
