virgin email and ipod touch

HI ALL! :0)

For 3 years I have been with BT and only mid Jan I took the plunge to go to virgin! I use an Ipod Touch 64gb - (for many of its apps other than music) which I could easily pick up my BT yahoo email from accessing the email app

I am unable to find settings on how to do this for virgin media - can anyone help - most of the time I pick email from here as I am not always at a PC .

ANY help appreciated. (IMAP or POP settings or details on what I should be using.

I called Virgin Tech for help and they basically sai i had to deal with it myself.

Regards
Claire

Re: virgin email and ipod touch

my understanding is that although you will be able to setup to receive your email, you will not be able to send email from your phone.
I've tried with my HTC with my ntlworld account (I've had to setup email forwarding to a googlemail account in order to send emails).

However I notice on one of their help pages this.......
In 2010 we'll be moving you over to the Google service, and some changes to your settings will be needed. Keep an eye out for more information on this closer to the time – we will e-mail you with some more details on this.

So it looks like we may soon be able to have that luxury of actually being able to send emails from our email account. Welcome to 2010, this is the future.

Anyway, this is what they are supposed to be for a virginmedia email account.

Re: virgin email and ipod touch

You can send email from your phone if you use the SMTP server of whatever network your phone is with. I'll presume you're on O2 if you have an iPhone, so use smtp.o2.co.uk as your outgoing email server, with no login required.

It does work, I've been doing it for years. On my N900 I've got 2 email servers set up depending on what internet connection is active, smtp.ntlworld.com for my home WiFi connection and smtp.t-email.co.uk (I'm on T-Mobile).

Re: virgin email and ipod touch

My Mrs had this problem following purchasing a Virgin phone at Christmas. Virgin SMTP servers expect the connection to come from a Virgin line, which a Virgin mobile isn't. I was advised in a Virgin shop that there's nothing can be done. So all you need is an open SMTP relay, or a free one. GMail does the trick nicely - I had to do some smoke and mirrors so it looks like mails are coming from her regular address, but it works fine.
