Recording in the future

Hi everyone

With Virgin bringing out this new IPTV and TiVo I just had something in mind?

Will recording be the same old record to HDD, or will they introduce HDD-Less boxes that will record to a server at the headend, which will then be streamed back to the box providing an update-able amount of space that can increase over time?

I probably sound like bit of a noob with this question, but I love Virgin, and have been trying to get someone on Sky, to switch because of all the good stuff coming soon ;D

Hi Jordan, nice to see someone posting enthusiastically who knows what the future holds ? in this direction, I would imagine that possibly a bigger capacity hard drive might be next inline for Virgin,we have to wait and see ...

Certainly exciting times ahead for Virgin Media... I think this is gonna be another good year for the TV side of the business

I once heard that the TV schedules will perhaps be a thing of the past in the distant future and everything will be on demand.

Just imagine not having to be home for a certain time or remembering to set your PVR to record. Just sit down press a couple of buttons and away you go with your favourite show.

That must be the way forward and its a good job VM have a solid infrastructure to deal with that.

Whether it happens or not is another story

I also have heard that somewhere, I think it was on here in fact.
But what about Live TV shows such as competitions etc?
I doubt this will be any time in the next few years though - Freeview probably wouldn't be able to do this.

Well if everything goes on demand then the broadcasters revenue model will need be drastically altered. All our favourite shows, especially all that lovely expensively produced US drama, is all made possible by advertising. Take advertiser out of the loop and you have no way of funding shows. VOD is all great and all but as Virgin TV Choice on demand has shown the catalogue can become quite stale and very little new content is being added on a regular basis.

There is a very long way to go and if the music industry thought us one thing (and the movie industry currently shows us that we haven't) they way studios pay for shows have to change.

I see Apple are now aggressively trying to change the price of iTunes shows form $1.99 to 99cents a episode which a good starting place, but how much would a cable customer have to pay to have the same choice that we get from 160 liner channels if everything was on demand?
