VPN

First time post!

To be honest not sure where to place this post, and thought that it might fit best here.

Firstly, I'm a reasonably confident PC user but I'm not a techie. I have a VM 10Mb Broadband, and I've recently set up a wireless router - nothing special about the router as it's a Dynamode BR - 6004W - G -N.

The company I work for has equipped my works laptop with Remote Access, using VPN so that I can work from home. When I currently try to login via Cable Wireless Remote Access I can pick up the wireless network no problem. However, when VPN starts up I get an error message 412: The remote peer is no longer responding.

I've read somewhere that VM does not provide support to their users regarding VPN, and have not yet contacted them. My works IS Dept advise that the problem relates to my own ISP rather than the works laptop - it has been fully tested.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks,

Mike

Re: VPN

One think you need to make sure of is that the IP subnet of your router does not clash with the IP sub-net of your company network.

Re: VPN

VM do not offer support, but they do not block VPN access.

I'd go with the post above... if in doubt connect the modem direct to the Laptop and give it a go.

I work from home all the time and use VPN to connect to the Office network and never have any problems at all

what VPN are you connecting to (I connect to a Checkpoint firewall using the CheckPoint secureremote client)

also check your wifi router supports VPN pass-thru should be an option in the settings.

if this works (and it probably will) my guess is the VPN software being used is checking the embedded IP in the packets being sent, and dropping them cos your machines IP is an internal (192. something or whatever) but the ip being routed to is your public IP.

I'm not an expert on this stuff, and I'm sure someone here can explain it more accurately than me. An easy (ish) fix is to put you lappie into the DMZ on your router so it doesn't NAT the traffic.

Re: VPN

what operating system ? I assume Vista

try this

add an "exception" in "Windows Firewall" of the VPN client software (executable file)

Also creat an INBOUND Rule for the UDP Port used (your IT dept will tell you this infomation"
