synthetics help

hi

i am doing an item for school project on BT which i will work on in september, i want to get started on it asap, but have only been given a few
key words which i seen on my teachers notes.

does anyone understand what a "synthetic" is when referring to BT cable laying/exhanges.

also whats a hook box?

any BT engineers who can shed any light on this?

ideally trying to understand what tasks a subcontractor will do when working for open reach/BT.

can anyone help?

cheers
