they haven't; i was merely stating my intention to go on the newsgroups and book one because something's obviously broken here
here's another one of my lovely graphs showing me downloading with 20 connections from astraweb and 20 connections from vm's own usenet servers

The pattern here seems to be: restart modem, get ~5300kB/s, then have it shoot up to over 6000kB/s then suddenly go down to 800kB/s (here's when I get the timeouts).
and here's what my modem pages look like. maybe someone can see if there are any other problems in there?
