50Mb goes down to 8

Upgraded from 20Mb to 50Mb yesterday and I'm having some what seems to be modem-related speed issues. I get 40Mb/s or more most of the time but at seemingly random times the speed drops down to just 8Mb/s as well as web pages taking much longer to load. Resetting the modem fixes this. Do I need to call Virgin for a new one? I used to get a consistent 20Mb/s.
Thanks in advance!

Re: 50Mb goes down to 8

You probably should call support or post on the newsgroup (write down the times that this occurs).

What do the power levels look like at http://192.168.100.1/CmDnstream.asp and http://192.168.100.1/CmUpstream.asp ?

It may be worth including items from the modems log (like timeout notifications).

Hmm, just noticed I had a timeout an hour ago.

Re: 50Mb goes down to 8

Power levels are as followed:
Downstream: Power Level (dBmV) 16.99 17.21 17.85 N/A
Upstream: Power Level (dBmV) 42.25 N/A N/A N/A
I haven't written any exact times down yet but it happens in the morning, afternoon and the last one was at around 4am today.
Thanks for the advice.

Re: 50Mb goes down to 8

US power level is near perfect.

DS looks very high, a more expert person will be along in a mo but iirc for QAM256 it wants to be 5 +/- 12.

A report to TS on the newsgroups would be advisable. (I know I'll get shot for suggesting this, but if you have a 10dB Forward Path Attenuator handy, it may calm things down a little).

Re: 50Mb goes down to 8

engineer came round this morning and put on one of those 10dB Forward Path Attenuators however it only seems to have made things worse. i'm getting more timeouts and the speed once went as low as 2Mb/s. it does seem to stay at full speed for longer than before though.
here are my new power levels:
Power Level
(dBmV) 8.07 8.63 9.14 N/A
Power Level
(dBmV) 52.75 N/A N/A N/A

Re: 50Mb goes down to 8

That US power level is now high, this shouldn't have been affected by adding an attenuator.

Re: 50Mb goes down to 8

hm well because im impatient i ordered a 10dB Forward Path Attenuator myself a few days before the engineer came and it arrived right after he left. so i thought i'd try that instead of the thing the engineer put on (which according to the label is a "FAT -10dB Attenuator") and now my power levels are:
Power Level (dBmV) 8.44 8.98 9.41 N/A
Power Level (dBmV) 43.75 N/A N/A N/A
problem solved? not quite. it'll be fine for a while downloading at 5000kB/s (or around that) but if it ever manages to get to 6000kB/s then everything goes wrong

It looks like the down stream is still to high.....
This makes the modem cut out and reboot.
The engineer should have dropped you 2 tap ports as well.

Re: 50Mb goes down to 8

No it isn't 8.44 to 9.41 is well within spec.

They definately should have put him on a lower gain tap though.

Please look to get level for areas Langley & Bromley networks using QAM256 are: +6 to -4 dBmV.
making them to high

Could i ask when you had the 50MB install did they change the power supply?

they haven't; i was merely stating my intention to go on the newsgroups and book one because something's obviously broken here

here's another one of my lovely graphs showing me downloading with 20 connections from astraweb and 20 connections from vm's own usenet servers

The pattern here seems to be: restart modem, get ~5300kB/s, then have it shoot up to over 6000kB/s then suddenly go down to 800kB/s (here's when I get the timeouts).

and here's what my modem pages look like. maybe someone can see if there are any other problems in there?

Wouldn't they need to? The old Ambit modems had a 10VDC supply and the new (ambit) one has a 12VDC supply.
