currently out of contract..info required..

hello folks, my first post and hopefully in the correct bit!

I have had virgin for a while now (since early ntl days) - we have the xl package (no movies or sports) basic b/b speed and the phone too, now my contract with virgin ended bout 5 weeks ago so I am on a rolling one just now...
now I do fancy a v+ box but dont know much about the costs etc..I know you pay £49, but then what? how much more a month is it? and do you really need to have your other box in another room ? - if thats a yes then fair enough..
now given I am out of contract with them and thinking bout getting v+ box would I be in any position to upgrade my bb speed or something like that?
when I was phoned to say that my contract would be up soon and would I be renewing I said I will leave it rolling for the time being and I was told to run along to sky as they will have anyone.. now after being told that it did put me off calling them back and seeing if a deal could be struck..

what do you reckon? worth the call to see if they can do anything or not?

thanks

Re: currently out of contract..info required..

Monthly cost for having a V+ Box is free on XL TV, while it's £5 if your on M or L. So you just need to pay £49 one time fee.

Also about V+, it's worth mentioning if you have a HDTV - the V+ Box upscales the picture so it looks about as good as having HD Channels (Note you have only one HD Channel on Virgin right now).

As for 'striking a deal', Call Customer Services and ask them how you can cancel your contract, they'll send you through to retentions and they will probably give you a discount off your bill or upgrade your internet for free. However this results in a 12 month contract so if you know you will be alright with Virgin for a year; then you do get a better service/cheaper service. (Tip: Tell them you are thinking of going to Sky to get better channels and they'll give you a discount!)

Getting a V+ Box will result in a new 12 month contract - Discount or not.

Edit: Saw your post bit about having the V+ Box in a different room, you don't have to - you can keep it in the room you have the standard box in, although if you want the box in a different room, it will be £5 extra a month.

Be prepared when you ring retentions that they don't call your bluff when you tell them you are thinking of leaving for Sky, admittedly it is unlikely buy you never know.

What usually happens is they let it go through the system and call you closer to the cut off date practically begging you to stay with a whole host of special discounts if you do

I was wondering how they dealt with that, I've read so many posts about people saying they rang retentions said they were going to Sky and then got fee upgrades or £10, £20 or whatever off their bill.
Its crossed my mind it can't be as simple as that or everybody would be doing it.
