In need of technical assistance.. right place?

Hi people, im looking for a bit of techincal know how... A year back I moved into a new house, I have just had o2 broadband setup after struggling with the awful AOl speeds. My line is dropping a lot and seems unstable, it was fine with Aol on 8mb but its really struggling with 02 ultimate (up to 24b i beleive).

The people at o2 say its very possible its the wiring in my house and not thier end. I havent ever had a home phone as i use my mobile so the phone lines are only used for broadband. never got round to checking the phone connections in my house as had no need but after speaking to o2 Ive had a look and they all look a right mess! (from my very limited knowledge on this subject). O2 cut the NB and its made the line more stable but im still suffering the odd connection drop out.

So i thought the next step would be to check my wiring and see what i could do my end. I really dont fancy calling BT out to be charged the earth, just about to get married and thats the last thing i need (weddings cost so much nowadays im sure you will agree!!). I was wondering if anone could take a look at my set up and provide me with any assistance if possible??

Ok bear with me as this could be a bit long winded but Im going to try and explain my setup and see if anyone can make sense of it.

The first point in my house is a copper device with 12 screw connections, i beleive its a internal box connection similiar to the attached but with only 12
ports http://www.telephonesuk.co.uk/images/BT37B.jpg. A green cord is hooked onto point 4. There are loads more wires but none are connected.

This leads two ways...

1. BT Master line-box www.telephonesuk.co.uk/images/NTE5_BT_rear.jpg. It has the old BT logo so im guessing its pretty ancient!

http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/BT_(old_T).jpg

This is connected as per the following:

Orange/White into point A
White/Orange into point B

Blue/White into point 2
White/Blue into point 5

2a. A junction box (R82122), cant find picture!

Point 1 - Red and White/Blue
Point 2 - Grey and Blue/White
Point 3 - Green and White/Orange
Point 4 - Orange/White

Loads more wires that are not connected.

2b. Standard box
This is connected:

Blue white into point 2
White Blue into point 5

Right, there is the setup. I can connect adsl on both the master line and the standard line. Both boxes work if the other has no phone cables plugged in so im guessing they may have thier own connections and not linked in anyway??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: In need of technical assistance.. right place?

There should only be one master socket. The incoming phone line (from the street) should connect direct to that. If the master socket has been moved then it's possible there might be a connection / junction box, but essential the wires should still be straight through between the street and master socket. Your junction box (the 12 screw connector thing) can be between the street and master socket, but there should only be one set of wires in and one out of this.

If extensions have been added they need to feed from the extension side only of the master socket to wherever the extension boxes are. They cannot be fed back via any of the incoming street side wiring.

Re: In need of technical assistance.. right place?

Thanks for the quick reply Rob.

I just took a closer look at the box coming into the house.
It has two leads coming into the house that connect up to another lead. Some of the wires have little plastic connectors on them that connect to another cable that feeds diirect to the master box.

I have just removed all wires from the both junction boxes and im still connected using the master box.

Im starting to think that connection problems may lay outside the house....
