Severed Cable
Last night whilst busy working in the front garden I stupidly managed to completely slice my VM cable in two.

I was straight on the phone to CS and have arranged for a team to come out tomorrow - good response so far.

However, im not sure if VM should charge me for this? Ive checked the cable - its not buried or protected in anyway, (there is no green duct anywhere) its just laying under a small layer of gravel! Ive checked and this installation does not appear to comply with regulations/codes etc. Would appreciate any guidance.

Was the cable installed before you moved in? As you could claim you didn't know where the cable was buried.

Unfortunately no. I had it installed last year. But it should have had some protection? or am I cluthing at straws here

You should be charged a call out - Equally it should be buried aspades depth although may not be possible if with all surfaces

I would stick to your guns, what you have done isn’t unreasonable considering, if the cable isn’t protected or buried deep enough then what do Virgin Media expect.

Fair enuf I guess. Will see what they say when the come out to visit. May try and point out that originall installation did not meet IEE and building regs. See if they take pity on me - ever hopefull

See no reason why there should be a call out fee when cable has not been installed to a recommended depth of 450mm. If this was not possible then it certainly should have had mechanical protection to guard agains this kind of mishap.
No way would I pay for shoddy workmanship.

I agree.

If it was buried to the correct depth and in the shielding etc then yes you would get charged.

Based on what you have said, I very much doubt Virgin will charge you (and even if they do you can argue to have it wiped)

Thanks Folks. Thats how I feel. If the installation was up to code and protected - then I wouldnt have cut it with my shears (well I hope not) - So will stand my ground.

That was one of the questions we asked the installers ... what happens if we sever the cable?

They said .... they should install it 'properly' at the correct depth and it would not be a problem .... if it was severed it would be reconnected at no cost to us

be mindful taffy that the visit will probably only be from a service tech (single man) he will do a temp repair and book a repull for you,which could be up to 7 days hence

Thanks for the "heads-up". Hope they will sort something out soon. Not having cable TV or the Internet I caught up woth some much needed DIY - We cant be having too much of that :-)

Hello!

I'm a noobie to this forum and have done pretty much the same thing, I was digging the front garden out to put in a drive and cut straight through the cable which was only about 1" below the surface.

Now the cable was there before we moved in.

Taffy? What happenend in the end? Did you get charged?

I have been told there may be a charge but surely the cable should have either been shielded or guarded?? So hopefully i can get away without being charged.

hi and welcome simon.
as i said in my previous post they will initially send a single man customer services technician who will temp the cable,it will be his decision then whether any charges will occur,but you seem to be in the clear on that as it wasnt to required depth or protected in sleeving.

Is there anywhere official tho that says it needs to be buried to a certain depth or if not it needs to be sheilded?
