Re: Scottish Gas

Hi, I'm seeking desperately for advice. I live in a one bedroom flat. I'm on Scottish Gas and I have it on every day from 6am till 9.30am and from 6pm till 11pm but not regularly (sometimes I change the timer). Over the Xmas holidays I was away for 3 weeks so I had the central heating on for an average of 3 hours a day on the lowest, as agreed with the letting agent and landlord.
The first bill I received was of less than 6 pounds for a 2 month period, (Sept -Nov)
After a few wrong bills, the first one of more than 500 pounds, the second one of more than 300 pounds I've received a third bill with a right meter reading of 250 pounds for 6 months, from September till March (billing me from the beginning of my tenancy and credited for what I already payed). I've asked a few people and they still find it high.
Should I rely the bill, should I rely people's commentaries???
Need help before calling Scottish Gas again or going to the bank and pay the bill...

Thanks.

Re: Scottish Gas

Contact Energywatch if you want to make a further complaint regarding Scottish Gas. I have an ongoing issue with Scottish Power that the regultor is dealing with.

First and foremost, always contact your supplier and escalate it to a manager first. If that fails then contact the regulator.

Again send all correspondance by recorded delivery if needs be.

Also this is a very good site with lots of people just ready to give you consumer advice.

Re: Scottish Gas

Dohhh...its really simple. If you move into a property note down the meter number and the meter reading. Photograph it if you can. Inform the supplier that you are the new occupier and pass the meter no and reading to them.

Dont, i repat, dont get involved in paying on monthly budget schemes. Simple budget yourself, put some money away every week toward the bill and pay it when it comes.

Get yourself onto U switch or similar and make sure you are using the cheapest supplier for you.

DONT buy anything from a doorstep energy seller.

If you move into a property with a prepayment/card meter..make sure the meter is reset to clear previous customers details and ensure that you obtain a new card. Dont use the old one.

In my experience, lots of people get involved in paying into monthly budget plans. They kind of assume that thats the end of it and that their bills are getting paid. What often happens though is that after a year or two,the meter gets read then they receive a catch up bill of a few hundred quid! They then often feel resentfull because they are under the illusion that they have already paid monthly. Often they end up in dispute, get cut off or are compelled to have a pre payment meter to pay off the debt.

Why not simply budget yourself and allocate some monthly each week/month,kept in your account or another place to pay the bill directly. Or can people just not handle their own money these days without getting into debt? It seems not.

Re: Scottish Gas

How are you getting into debt by paying monthly?

You're owing more by only paying quarterly. Direct debit is generally a cheaper tariff too.

You still get a quarterly statement, you only need to check it and send in a meter reading if it's not right. No different to paying quarterly, you can still get under charged the same.

If they assume they've paid it without checking it that's their own fault.

Not true. Myself and my Mrs were paying £50 a month to Scottish Power as a monthly payment. We got a bill 2 years later stating we owed £2,000.

We've had managers look into this and now the regulator has got involved. They now state we owe them £3,000. Utter twoddle (want to say something else that sounds like bullocks)

Next door neighbour, same set up as us all the same heaters etc, she only pays £43 per month by DD and she owes naff all (apologies if naff is deemed as bad language, wasn't intentional). There is something wrong here and hence why I asked Energywatch to step in. Currently we had to agree to a pre payment meter going in and the debt still keeps rising and by considerable amounts.

So paying a certain agreed fee per month can land you right in the poop. it's not just ourselves it's happened to either.

Waiting for Energywatch to deal with this and depending on the outcome, I will be taking further action (legal) against Scottish Power.

How would this be any different if you were paying quarterly? You'd still be "using" the same amount either way.

The timing of the payments has nothing to do with the overall amount of energy used. It does however have a big difference on the amount you pay per unit for the amount you use.

I rest my case....and there are plenty more just like it.

Keep control of your spending and personal responsibility for it. Don't pass control to someone else.
