Problem with my dads 120 modem

Hi peeps.

I am at my dads house and he has a problem.

He has a NTL120 modem, connected by ethernet, to a belkin router then to the computer.

If the cable modem is plugged in and he boots the machine, the computer freezes when it gets to the desktop screen [as the little icons in the tray are loading. You can CTRL ALT DEL and log off, and it goes back to the log on screen.

If you pull the power supply from the cable modem, then log on, it runs fine, plug the power back in and let it boot, and here I am writing this.

He did have a message error coming up with the modem off "truck.exe" so I deleted the file from the startup folder, that wasn't connected to this problem though.

He has firmware version 1 in his modem.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Oh, the router is for my brother who has an xbox and uses a wireless link.

My brother just told me, that the xbox and computer share the same IP, so when my dad is on the computer and my brother on the xbox, they both get a really slow connection.

Is this linked to the other problem? if so how do I change one of the IP's so it knows 2 devices are connected? It's a Belkin f5d7230-4 router.

I think you may have a bit of a mess to sort out here.

truck.exe implies that an ntl or Virgin Media installation disk has been run on the PC. That is probably telling your PC it want's to connect direct to the modem, not via a router. You may be able to delete those settings if you look in Windows Control Panel, add / remove programs. Unless you are connecting to the modem via USB you don't need the ntl / Virgin Media install disks.

You cannot have two devices on the same network using the same IP address. That is just going to throw a wobbly. On the computer, go into network connections, and the specific network card properties. Make sure that the IP and DNS are all set to auto. The router should allocate an IP to the computer. Similarly the Xbox, should have an auto IP.

Hi Rob,

Is the cable modem using the NTL software at all? What I mean is, if I remove the program, will I need to use windows add hardware to configure the modem or is it already configued and in use?

if you connect via ethernet you dont need any software

Ah okay thanks, I'm at home now so instructing my brother.

He says that the computer IP is DHCP assigned, and the xbox is also auto assigned.
But they still have the same IP, is it something that should be configued in the router? What is assigning them their IPs?

If he`s changed from usb to ethernet then a reboot all round will probably be in order.

Well he bought and installed the wireless router a few months ago, so the problem has been there for many reboots.

I'd power off everything, modem, router, PC(s), Xbox. Now power on just the modem, let settle, router, let settle, PC. Leave the xbox off for now.

What is the IP being issued to the computer - should be something like 192.168.x.x The router's LAN IP range should be similar. If you go to the router's admin panel, you should be able to see in it's status that it gets a completely different IP for the WAN (internet) side. Whilst in that admin panel, check that the router is configured to issue IPs (DHCP is on). Can you browse the internet with this setup from that connected PC?

Only once you are really happy with the above all working OK, should the xbox be booted. When you check it, it should get a different 192.168.x.x address. If it doesn't then the IP has been programmed into the setup of the xbox. You'll need to check it's settings properly.

Where will I see the IP issued to the computer, in the wireless router admin page?

Yep the router will normally be able to list the IPs "leased" to connected devices, probably in it's status area of the admin pages. The computer itself will also tell you it's IP if you click the properties of the network connection.
