An installed app used to use MSDE and has been migrated to SQL 2005 (MSDE isn't supported on Vista).
I would search the disk for any data files (*.mdf) and/or see if there are any database servers running.
Probably safer to just disable the service before removing it complete, in case something breaks!
Well my curiosity got the better of me, I opened them and could only find the default data tables. I'll try disabling and see what happens. Quite stupid to waste resources in this manner imo.

I believe I found it to be part of business contacts manager for Outlook 2007, this seems to be installed with the trial version of MS Office 2007 (and presumably the pro version).

Exactly what I was about to say - seen it pre-loaded many times now with Office 2007.
Yes it's part of BCM - if you are not using BCM, you can remove it.
