Thumbs down Cannot connect to webspace

Hi folks. I have tried to read all posts on this topic but am still stuck. I am connecting via ntl cable line (broadband modem). I have tried using cmd line (ftp - open upload.ntlworld.com). Response is "cannot connect, unknown error no". Using terrapin, I get "login rejected by server". Using MS Publisher I get "cannot connect to server on computer upload.ntlworld.com". I am aware of password issues and, although I have changed email password, I still know my original ntl password. It doesn't seem to be the issues as I don't get as far as password request.

I am running a firewall, zonealarm. I have put upload.ntlworld.com into trusted zone and turned off firewall for trusted zone. I have given cmd and ftp (and the other programmes) permission to access internet. No succes. I have tried disabling firewall, still no success.

I guess it is not an ntl problem, as others seem able to access their space. But I am at a loss what to do next. Any ideas would be very gratefully received.

Re: Cannot connect to webspace

I find (and it's a bit bizarre.) that I can only connect using IE for ftp.

Tried terrapin, command line and wsftp all to no avail.

Oh and passive mode too.

Re: Cannot connect to webspace

Probably a daft question, but you are trying to connect from your home and not from somewhere else?

PS I use coreftp lite it's free and easier to setup than terrapin

Re: Cannot connect to webspace

Yes I am trying to connect from home, over my ntl line, using my original ntl password. I am pretty clear it is not an ntl problem, because none of the methods for connecting to server - dos command, IE Explorer, Terrapin, Frontpage, Publisher - will connect to server. I never get as far as putting in a password. So I guess it is something my end blocking the connection. But what?? Is anyone aware of anything in network settings that could prevent connection?

I run a pretty bog standard PC XP pro that fires up and connects to internet first time every time. I have no problems browsing, downloading, etc. Only when I try to connect to webspace server. I have similar difficulties connecting to non ntl webspace servers, but that gets complicated by not knowing whether connections not through their lines are allowed.

I won't die if I don't find an answer, but it bugs me to be beaten!

Re: Cannot connect to webspace

In your internet connections are you specifying a proxy? Also do you direct connect to your BB source or is there a router in the way?

Re: Cannot connect to webspace

No proxy, no router, just the ntl cable broadband modem. Geoffn

Re: Cannot connect to webspace

Try rebooting the modem, do you run any firewall software? Have you ever been able to access the upload space?

Re: Cannot connect to webspace

Thanks Paul. I've rebooted modem. I use zonealarm firewall, but I've tried disabling it, I've put upload.ntlworld.com into trusted zone, I've given relevant programmes permissions. I'm logged in as administrator. And I have checked passive ftp in advanced options in internet explorer. Still no connection to ftp server!

---------- Post added at 16:47 ---------- Previous post was at 16:46 ----------

Sorry, should have added I have not previously accessed web space - this is my first attempt.

151 & get them to check you're using right password.

Last time they checked this for me it took 2 mins and the agent was very helpful

Re: Cannot connect to webspace

Thanks everyone for your help. Problem now resolved. In case anyone runs into similar difficulties, culprit was Zonealram, specifically Application Layer Gateway needs to be able to accept connections from Internet but was blocked by Zonealarm, even after I had disabled it! Uninstalling zonealarm, then reinstall, solved the problem.

Re: Cannot connect to webspace

Ah the one where you said you tried disabling it? Must have missed that or I would have asked "How?" since the only proper way is to stop it running at start up and then reboot. Even then it can throw a fit. Would have suggested removing it but was posting from work and got a bit busy lol.
