Quick question about wireless...

Hi guys

If I were to buy a new wireless cable router (I have to cos the one I have now is ADSL ) would it work if it wasn't connected to my PC?

The cable point is in my living room and I want the modem/router to stand alone in the living room and broadcast wirelessly to my PC - will this work?

Also, any suggestions as to a good router?

Yep, it will work as it is just transmitting data between the two units and does not require a physical connection once set up.
Linksys and netgear wireless router come highly recommended around the forum.

I'd recommend having the router accessible for a PC or laptop. If you screw up the wireless security, then you need to have ethernet connection to put it back straight.... (I've done it....)

I have a laptop so can connect to reset security etc etc but I mainly use my PC and it's not going to be in the same room as the cable point.

Check the price on the internet first - frequently you get reduced prices at the store if you order online and collect.

I saved £13 on a scanner last year by ordering online and then trotting down to the PC World store an hour later...

This is a good idea do it all the time, I'd only uy from PC World as a last resort, if you can buy online Amazon have some really good prices for routers comparable to Ebuyer or Dabs.

Bought a Linksys router from amazon ages never had any complaints

Amazon you need to take into account the postage costs, plus the waiting time for delivery. I know that some of the staff in PC World leave a little to be desired, but if all they have to do is sort out your internet order - then it's hard to screw that up?

I agree if PC world have an online offer go for it, never seemed to be consistant with what was avaialble as a web offer when I look, but sometimes the have some good offers on.

Not very hard if the Staines branch is anything to go by.
Placed an order online to pick up a router in store, went along an hour or so later and they were sold out.
"What about my router that I paid for online which is supposed to be set aside for me to pick up?" I asked.
"Oh we don't do that" they replied.

So it seems, for that store at least, they wait for someone to turn up with the print out, then go grab one off the shelf, rather than reserve one for you.
