Audio out not working?

Anyone that can help me with this, I'd very much appreciate it.

I am trying to get the audio from my V box to come out through the surround speakers powered by my DVD drive. However when I connect up the audio out on the V box to the audio in on the DVD box, the sound is kind of echoey and repeated. Furthermore, it appears to be the standard terrestrial signal 'passed through', rather than the digital audio (ie. it doesn't change when I change the channel).

Can anyone give me, or point me towards an existing guide to setting up the V+ HD service with a DVD surround sound system? I must be doing something wrong.

Thanks in advance
