Adding OS to VISTA boot menu.

Hiya

I have Windows 2000 Advanced server partially installed, however I need it added to the Vista boot manager, however unlike Windows XP I don't see anywhere to add it?

The NT is on the same partition as Windows Vista and NT uses/

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microso ft Windows 2000 Advanced Server" /fastdetect

Could anyone assist me on adding this to the list?

Vista doesn't use Boot.ini. It uses it's own, non-user-editable file. To change the startup options, right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties". Then click "Advanced System Properties". You might need to confirm you want to do that.

Now, click "Advanced" and "Startup and Recovery". This brings up what's basically the same dialog in XP for changing boot menu options. Make sure the option to display list of operating systems is ticked. Now, look at Default Operating System. Click on the drop down box below. You should see two options: "Microsoft Windows Vista" and "Earlier Windows". It may list Windows Server 2000 instead of "Earlier Windows". I am on my vista machine at work, which is single boot, so I can't check.

Now, when you reboot, you should get a boot menu with those two options, and Vista selected by default. If you select "Earlier Windows", it will bring back the old Windows boot menu (which uses boot.ini).

I found out how to do it :p I added the right settings in the Windows XP boot menu!

So how can you do that when you're presented with a non-booting OS?

Err, you do it from Vista. The way I read the original post Windows 2000 AS was the OS that was not bootable..

I was talking generally... so, the only option if Vista itself won't boot because of boot files messed up, is a reinstall?

might be usefull and apologies I dont have loads of time to explain (will do later tonight if people still need information) but google for bcdedit.exe and download (or grab it from your vista install). Its the Boot Manager for DOS and it will allow you to setup whats displayed on your boot screen.

Pretty easy to use and do a /? for command options.

As said will elaborate later if required but just stepping out now...
