ntl:home 100 modem and torrent protocol

Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster here

I've got an ntl:home 100 modem on a 10mb connection (North Hertfordshire) and I've noticed that when using BitTorrent-esque programs (uTorrent) or updaters that make use of the torrent protocol for sharing files, such as that of the Blizzard Updater for World of Warcraft my modem will reboot.

It is now becoming a real pain, what can I do? I've heard that NTL will only replace hardware if the hardware is faulty, and the problem is sporadic at best. It becomes noticably more apparent when uploading at a more significant speed (20kb/sec+ I guess) as well as downloading. With BitTorrent this is ok but soon causes an issue (awful seed ratio's), but with World of Warcraft patcher (I am aware you can get the patches elsewhere, but it is a convenience thing) it is impossible because as soon as the download gets going (it'll share part-downloaded files) so does the upload, causing my modem to reboot.

I am using the ntl:home 100 modem in conjunction with a WRT54GS.

Please advise

Ta,

Tobe

Re: ntl:home 100 modem and torrent protocol

You probably need a new NTL:250 modem, but you would only get one if your existing heap of junk proved to be faulty. Ntl will replace it for you but it'll cost you £50!

One way of avoiding the charge is tell them you want to quit (assuming your not still in your 12month contract period) and ask to be put through to retentions which is the department that tries to keep you as a customer. It's possible to get them to drop the £50 charge.

Nothing wrong with that router.

Good luck!

Re: ntl:home 100 modem and torrent protocol

Am I right in saying only the ntl:250 modem is capable of 10mb?

Re: ntl:home 100 modem and torrent protocol

OK so basically all the newer modems are capable of 10mb, but the ntl:250 modem is just the best one for the job.

Re: ntl:home 100 modem and torrent protocol

For anyone not in the know, the Pace and Samsung tv boxes arn't capable of 10mbit either, although the Samsung can manage around 6mbit and the Pace around 1mbit.

Re: ntl:home 100 modem and torrent protocol

Issue is, on single connections (on fast enough FTP & HTTP connections), the modem is perfectly fine and doesn't cave.

Is this similar to how routers will reboot when their routing table fills up? As there are lots of connections from various sources causing it to crash at high speed?

Thanks,

Tobe

Re: ntl:home 100 modem and torrent protocol

I have 10 meg through my 120, all fine, no issues I get a full 10 meg connection on all my wired pc's.

There might well be an issue with your 100/120 modems, but it is not a general fault.
ALL ambit modems are ok for the 10 meg.
