Hi,

I have a wireless cam that specifies 200ma DC+8V input for power. It came with a adaptor that lets it run off a 9v battery.

Question is can i run it off a 9v 300ma mains adaptor?

Looks close but even a slight discrepancy in power supplied to the unit may cause damage to it.

hmm - the voltage will probably be ok, it is the amperage being 30% higher that is the worry - theoretically the cam will only 'pull' as many milliamps as it needs, but I am not sure if that is different for regulated & unregulated power supplies. I think altis is the chap for this one...

What sort of adaptor is it for the 9V battery? Is it just a battery clip and plug/socket or does it have any obvious circuitry or even a bump in the wire covered with sleeving?

8V is an odd voltage to specify for battery operated kit. I'd be very very surprised it if couldn't cope with anywhere beteen 6V and 9V or even a bit higher without any problems, but you would need to use a *regulated* mains adaptor as the unregulated types can give out much higher voltages (as much as twice the specified voltage) which could to damage.

I would imagine that as it comes with an adaptor for 9v batteries that it will also have a regulator inside it.
Design wise it would be the sensible option to design it with an internal regulation section to teh circuitry so that it maintains a stable voltage for the video section, which is likely to be of a much lower voltage.

So connecting it to a 9V regulated supply should be OK.

However...

Tell us the make & model of the camera also about the adapter, does it appear to have any hidden electronics or is it just a battery clip on a wire with a plug to go into the camera?

we can then look atthe website for it (if there is one) and make a better determination if it should be OK.

Its going to have a regulator for sure and prob a smoothing circuit. I would imagine it would be fine with a mains DC voltage transformer. Its what I run my wireless camera on and ive never had a problem. Cheers
