Re: PC for under £400
Go to the Dell website, they sell refurbished/returned pcs with warranty for a reasonable price. If not E-Buyer are pretty good.

Re: PC for under £400
Just got a leaflet through the door from DELL today.
£399+VA T (£468 inc) gets you a Dell Dimension 5100
Pentium 4, 541 (3.2Mhz, 1mb L2 cache, 800Mhz FSB)
17" Flat Panel Monitor
512Mb DDR2 RAM
160GB HD (SATA 7200rpm)
Intergrated Audio
Integrated Intel Extreme Graphics.
Integrated Intel Pro 10/100 Network card
16xDVD+/-RW Drive
Windows XP Home & MS-Works 7.0
1 year collect & return service.
Seems like a good deal to me if you want a brand name.
You just couldn't build one cheaper.

Re: PC for under £400
The Dell "E-Value" order code on the leaflet is: DMUK4-D07512
The normal price was £469+VA T (£551 inc)
EDIT: Dell sales line is: 0870 907 5811
Link: www.dell.co.uk/b2b (although I can't seem to find the exact code).
Also seems to be a free delivery special offer on some items (2 days left).
EDIT2: http://configure.euro.dell.com/dells...07512&x=3&y=11
or if that link don;t work, use this .......
http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/to...n&s=bsd&~ck=pn
and enter the above E-Value code (and you can customize the specs).

Re: PC for under £400
Bah, 1MB cache means you're limited to P4. As you're working to such a limited budget, you're gonna have to cut some corners elsewhere.
If I was looking to beat £400 then I'd go for an Athlon 64bit 3000+ instead of a P4. At least this would mean you have more freedom for all the other components. But, it does not have 1MB cache, only 512Kb.
Why are you insisting on 1MB cache?

Re: PC for under £400
www.meshcomputers.com
I have one from there cost me £550 but thats with a ati x700 pci-e card.
You could configure the same system without the card for about £420 perhaps, which would give you a PCI-E mainboard a Athlon 64 3000 newcastle core processor 512mb DDR ram, and a 80gb SATA HD, with keyboard and mouse.
However for a monitor you would be stuffed although I have a 17inch CRT I could let go for about £20.

Re: PC for under £400
For the money you pay for a Dell I am sure you could get a much better AMD computer.

Re: PC for under £400
you might end up paying more to have it custom built for you (or to build it yourself) but do you need that software? You're paying for it.
Also, a custom-built one will be more upgradeable in future.
