Graphic Card Problem?

hi all, i am new to here, oh actually not that new! i was here few months ago for some info on DIGI box but not been posting!

anyway, here is my question: i have a PC was running XP no problems at all till one day it just stopped working! then i tried a million times to re-install the operating system(XP), as soon as the system is trying to test for the graphic card then the screen just goes blank and never will wake up again

thought its a graphic card problem! then tried to install my Windows ME from my old machine! guess wot? ? it worked just fine with no problems at all!

i then borrowed my mate's graphic card with the old analogue plug (i ve a TFT screen with DVI plug) and installed the XP, everything seems just fine! until i switched back to my card, the screen says found new hardward and gone puff.... blank again

is there anything i can do about the card at all or do i really need a new card?

Thanks all !!

Re: Graphic Card Problem?

Sounds like a chip has given up the ghost on the card to be honest, I take it there is no VGA connector on the card you can check? If Windows is finding the hardware but the hardware isn't responding then as soon as windows installs the drivers and tries to switch to the correct settings and drivers for the card you will find yourself looking at nothing.
5 years is a long time in computing I'm afreaid.

Re: Graphic Card Problem?

i know that's a long time in computing but i still thinks it's good! better than some of the new PCs selling in TESCO and etc!

oh well, i might have to fork out a tenner on ebay and hunt for a card then! :P (i don't understand how i made the decision on that PC for £1500, £10 can be too much for me now!)

Re: Graphic Card Problem?

It could just be the DVI cable, have you tried it on analogue?

Re: Graphic Card Problem?

What sort of card are you looking for? What connections do you need and what do you do with the PC? Gaming etc?
Someone here will point you in the right direction for a card to suit your needs.

Re: Graphic Card Problem?

thanks all for replying:P

ZrByte vbmenu_register("postmenu_501722", true); : no, it's not the cable, my tft screen works just fine with the old grapic card on ME but not on XP

Paul: i dont play games etc, only use for general day to day use, but i do use photoshop quite a lot and found my old card was good 4 me already! as my TFT screen only got a DVI plug so that's a must!

Zinglebarb: how do they compare to some of those on ebay?

Re: Graphic Card Problem?

I have seen this before. At the start of the setup after the format part xp will scan for hardware. If I am guesing correctly the screen then goes black and setup halts..

I had this problem when I had an IDE controler card installed in the system. After this card was removed setup went through o.k.

Can I sugest that you remove all cards apart from the graphics card and see if setup will run. It does not sound like the graphics card if the fault is apearing at the part of setup I refered to above...

HTH

Re: Graphic Card Problem?

Have you tried it with no other cards plugged onto the motherboard ? It may be an IRQ conflict between the graphics card and another card in the system.
