Unhappy Codecs

Hi everybody
I am in a bot of sticky bother. I have a number of video files - both avi & mpeg. Yesterday I was able to create DVD files using winAVI program. Also using Nero, i was able to create DVD videos by dragging the appropiate film into the nero screen and that would do the business for me.
Today when I tried the same thing to create a DVD movies or try to create DVD video files. it kept saying that it was an unrecognized format.
The films play were playing fine using Real player and Windows media player 10, but today they do not play in WMplayer 10 but will play in Real player. Upon Checking GSpot program, there were 5 codes for video and numerous others for Audio. I downloaded the KLite Codec package which installed any amount of other codecs both audio and video but still MP10 will not play it and am still unable to create the DVD video files. Media player Classic will play the same films fine.
I am running winXP and so also tried a system restore and that had no effect at all.
I checked Microsoft.com to see if there was any updates installed and the last was about 2 weeks ago.
Can anybody help me on this?
