Samsung phono audio

Hi everyone

I used to be on the old board (.com) and only recently joined here after my 1Mb upgrade left me with a couple of questions. Thankfully I've found most of the answers from browsing round the threads but I just wanted to ask about the lack of audio output (phono) from the new Samsung box.

I was disappointed to see this gone from the box, since I did use it on the old Pace box. Unfortunately I didn't spot it until after the engineer had gone. Now I know I can buy a special scart cable (have seen Maplin, etc.) which will allow use of the audio again, but I figure why should I have to fork out £10 for one? I've read other people's posts saying they were given one by the engineer at the time of the upgrade, and since it's a feature they have taken away from me I don't see why I should have to pay to have it back.

So what can I do? Phone them up and wait in the hour long queue :o and hope someone can give me a free cable? At the minute this seems like my only option but if anyone has any better ideas (eg. a particular number to call, or email address to try, or any other suggestions) then please let me know

Thanks

Re: Samsung phono audio

I don't think there's an easy answer here. I only got a break out lead from the eng because he'd unplugged the PACE setup which used the phono connectors. I think he would have been in an awkward position if hed left a Samsung box, which was only provided because he wanted to replace the box, beleiveing it would cure the fault (it didn't) not because I'd asked him to. Having gone to the effort of replacing the box it wasn't worht him removing it.

When ntl provide STBs initially I don't recall them providing scart leads and the like at that stage, so why should they have to provide leads that arent in use, just in case you might want them in the future?

Presuming you meant to say phono lead not scart lead (cos one of those was provided at stb initial install) then that's a fair point, and as I didn't have mine connected at the time of the upgrade I don't blame them for not providing me with one.

It's just that it's a feature that was there, I had phono cables to make use of it and everything was fine. Now they've changed the setup and my configuration doesn't work. It's like if an electrician came round to fix a faulty socket then said "by the way you'll have to buy special adaptors in order to use anything that connects to this socket". I could think up plenty more analogies but I'm sure you get the picture

Re: Samsung phono audio

Hi NTL users

I have had my dodgy Pace box replaced by a new shiney silver Samsung, but was disappointed that this box does not include phono sockets so that I can output radio stations direct to my hi-fi amplifier, as previously. I know you can link tthis via the TV, but I do not fancy leaving this switched on all day.
Can anyone please recommend a decent scart with phono breakout as I do not want one of those cheapo leads?
The engineer and customer services were not of much help and the lead recommended by someone previously earlier in this forum-Maplins item:VA23A-has been discontinued.

Many thanks

Re: Samsung phono audio

Good point. I also use the phono out as my TV does not have an audio output. Is there such a thing as a scart to scart with phono breakout ?

Re: Samsung phono audio

I am sure NTL will be happy to provide you with a Scart to phono adaptor as long as you are happy to pay £25 for the engineer call out!

Re: Samsung phono audio

I managed to buy a cable for my needs a few months ago, just happened to find one in a shop for about 3 quid, good quality one too

If you look around you will be able to find one - a quick search on google for scart to phono cable came up with a result at http://www.videkonline.co.uk/home.as...5&chapterID=26 (scroll down to the scart to phono cables section). Hope that helps

Re: Samsung phono audio

Many thanks for all of your suggestions. I have now bought a 'breakout' lead and it works a treat.

Re: Samsung phono audio

The answer to this is very simple all. ntl: do not support sourroundsound, linking to hifi's and so forth. It's upto the customer to make sure that the equiptment they have is compatible with that of ntl: before installing, upgrading etc. As such, if some new hardware does not support your sourroundsound system there is nothing you can do. As you have seen by posts here, there are alternatives.

You could call (and wait in the queue by the way, it's not exactly fair on other customers if your asking for shortcuts - albiet they are rather nice and I know loads) Request that you have a PACE box back. However, service calls of this kind are very often cancelled unless there is a genuine fault with the STB itself. (These are expensive peices of equiptment) It would all depend on who takes the actual call i.e whether they know what they're doing. Don't be surprised if the agent you talk to mentions a call out charge and also a price for a replacement box.
