Just got it installed and I've registered, but can't connect...(And I'm not clueless)
Hi, never had to post on support forums before so sorry if I don't give the right info straight away.
Got NTL cable set up at our house on Thursday. Initially had a problem with the 'new user registration', but like they said, that was fixed by 7.30pm and I successfully registered. (Although one stage, the 'email testing' kept asking me to retry, and after about 30 attempts I skipped that part.
I have all the details like username, subscriber number etc.
But when the installation/registration process finished, I did not seem to be connected to the net. I ran 'broadband medic' which said everything was set up ok (and also mentioned I supposedly have a Mcafee Firewall, which I've never touched! I have an Outpost firewall and it was not active at this point.)
My setup is - PC laptop with Windows XP SP1, modem connected by ethernet.
The other networking connection I have setup from when I'm at my parents house is Tiscali. I have stopped this being the default connection and made sure I'm set to 'do not dial a conection'. So as far as I can tell this is not interfering.
All the correct lights are lit up on the modem, the ethernet light flickers rapidly. I have attempted several times to power off the modem and restart it, but this does not change anything. (Also restarted my PC)
In my taskbar I have several network connections, but none seem to be for the NTL connection. One is inactive, and the other is flashing as if online, but states that it's been online for like 30 days with a speed of 100mbps.
I can get no access to the internet - both my browsers (IE and Firefox) just give me 'page not displayed' errors, etc. I've also attempted manually entering proxy settings with no change.
I find this puzzling, but then I've never used cable internet before, at home I have a Tiscali DSL service via a USB modem. Am I right to assume that once you have NTL successfully set up, once you connect an ethernet cable from the modem to the computer, you should get an active connection in the taskbar? It feels strange not having to sign in with username and password.
All I can think of is that my ethernet PCI card is faulty, but then surely I wouldn't have been able to register if it was....
I'm sure something has gone wrong somewhere.
Could anybody offer any advice?
Thanks a lot
Mike

Just having to nip out so to cableforum.
You could have a read of Robin Walkers site http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...ips/index.html which is very helpful or wait for someone to come along.
What IP address do you get?

OK thanks for your replies, I'll have to get back to you both on those things, because my PC is at home, so the only net access I have is at university, which is a pain.

Interesting... I was just about to post to mention that at no point in my registration/installation was I asked for the serial number of my cable modem..... Could this be the reason? From what I've read this seems to be the first stage of registration, but it never happened with me!
Is there ay way of registering the modem without going through the process again? (which I assume you can't...)

Same as my problem.New cable installation registered on the 22nd Feb picking up the ip address etc but no actual connection to the internet.Anyway Monkeybreath is going to have a look at it tomorrow for me as the registration is probably stuck somewhere after the problems with the data centre this week.

to the forum, Laz, this is, no doubt, due to the recent outages.
Service status now says registration is now ok, but I understand some installs during the outage may have stalled, I would suggest giving customer service a call.
Hope you get it sorted

Monkeybreath has just fixed my regisration problem so i'm up and running now. Might be an idea to give him a PM to see if he can sort out your problem which sounds exactly the same as mine

Re: Just got it installed and I've registered, but can't connect...(And I'm not clueless)
Hmmm. I wouldn't mind calling customer services as much if I didn't have to do it from my pay-as-you-go mobile....Our student house phone line is locked to incoming only... Which is the one and only reason for us to get NTL... given a choice I wouldn't have got it!
Anyway, as asked earlier in the thread here's my results from ipconfig, if I can attach the jpeg successfully.
From reading stuff about IP addresses stuck in the process of registration, it seems mine might be, but then I don't know which of those IP addresses stated in the report is the one to look at.

Don't forget that Monkeybreath and other NTL staff on here will help customers with problems that going through the official proceedures has failed to fix. They should not be the first port of call for cutomers with problems. Try the official channels first.

OK will do, thanks. Was it a simple process? Could you not tell me what you did yourself?
