mysterious calls

Over the past couple of days, every couple of hours or so the phone rings and once i pick up and say "hello" a recorded message kicks in and says the following:

Quote:
This is an important call from Egg. Please press any key to continue.
I haven't been pressing any key however, just hanging up straight away. No one in this household has an account with Egg or anything to do with them, and the number is registered with the TPS. Any suggestions what I can do, or is it just something i will have to put up with?

Re: mysterious calls

Ring egg and ask if they are ringing you, as it may be a scam to get details from egg customers

Re: mysterious calls

I had one of those calls on my mobile last month.

I hung up and called Egg only to be told it's an automated system they use to check recent transactions if the system flags them for any reason.

They were surprised that I didn't trust it the first time round.

Re: mysterious calls

I had 2 of those from Egg last month. I hung up on them straight away and called Egg back later in the day. They had been triggered by a 2000 ukp transaction I had put on the card. They explained that any suspicious transactions on their cards trigger these automated calls. When you answer the call is put through to somebody in the call center along with the reason for the call appearing on their screen.

Be warned folks. I'm not saying this is a phishing attack but this technique was reported on the radio a few weeks ago.

Re: mysterious calls

I think its really bad of companies to make calls of this sort with automated diallers as the customer has no way of actually knowing who they are speaking with.

Why they cant just send out a letter first class like the Co-op do I'll never know.

Re: mysterious calls

HSBC used to send out a letter listing any "suspicious" transactions on my old credit card. Strangly enough all the ones they brought to my attention were under £100, they weren't worried about anything over the £100 liability limit.

Re: mysterious calls

Call the telephone preference service on 08450700707 or register on their site www.tpsonline.org.uk. They will register you and any marketing calls and the like should stop after a few days upto 28 days. Alot of custs call about these types of calls. However it may not stop all of them only the ones that using the marketing directories.

Re: mysterious calls

I recently put my mother on the TPS list as she was having a number of calls daily which were either silent when answered or stopped ringing before she got to the phone. Thankfully these calls have now stopped.

When I checked her phone bill there was one call for about £6. I found out that she had a habit of dialling 1471 when the ringing stopped before she got to the phone and then pressing 3 after hearing the number to call them back. One of the calls was possibly a 09xx number which relied on people doing just what my mother had done. She said that when she answered one call it was a woman talking and she could not get a word in so hung up after a few minutes. Probably a recorded message from a 09xx number.
