Re: 2.5" usb powerd drive?

I use an external USB2.0 2.5 drive with a 40gb hard drive and have found they work perfect without the other cable plugged in. Though there is a speed increase if you use both cables, its neglegable if you are only moving a small amount of files, and is unnoticable if in USB 1.1 mode but makes a big difference when transfering large volumes of data in usb2.0 mode.

Thx, if i put the main connector in first drive powerd up ok without the other one in if i put hte second one in first it doesnt power up properly untill the main one is in

its on some older usb 1.1 laptops there is only 1 usb port...

also case is blue with VIAO on it but i don't know who made it usally viao = sony but im not sure with this

Edit drive is rated to use 5v @ 500ma which i belive is the max power you can take out of 1usb port so i guess i can run it on 1 port if i need to

Re: 2.5" usb powerd drive?

Hiya I have one of those Vaio cases off of Ebay and find the drive I have in powers up fine off of one port, the second cable only carries power so if you saw a speed increase it was a fluke, some drives will require more power so if they fail to power up or seem to be dodgy @ writing data or power down in the middle of something, plug both in, it cant really hurt anyways.

Re: 2.5" usb powerd drive?

yeh mine was having a problem with files over 150mb at usb2 speed used to get a delayed write error failed although the seller did make this clear in the item desciption that this was a problem with those cases.

I think i fixed it anyhow went into hardware properties on the drive and changed it from optimise for quick removal to optimise for performance (enables write cacheing) not had a delayed write error since.
