V+ hd
After a bit of fiddling around, I've finally got an HD picture from my V+ box that looks HD. However, I would appreciate if anyone could share their thoughts on:- - Whether there's any advantage in 1080i over 720i?
- Whether I should be worried that my Sony Bravia TV seems unable to autodetect the V+ box (although clearly it's receiving an HDMI signal from it!)?
Thanks very much!

Re: V+ hd
Not sure on the second part, but the 1080i vs 720 p depends on the TV's native resolution.
If it's an HD ready set with supports 720p/1080i it will probably have a native resolution of 768 (1,366x768 pixels) - a 720p picture will be display as is, but a 1080i picture will need to be downscaled to 768. NOt much point upscaling in the V+ just to be downscaled on the TV!
If it's a 1080p set, then 1080i will def be better.
A better explanation here.

Re: V+ hd
Isn't the BBC HD broadcast in 1080i? Therefore, if your TV has a good scaler (better than the V+ box) then wouldn't 1080i always win?

Because the box outputs HD signals via HDMI and also has VOD HD content thats why.

It is a good use as it upscales the other channels and its a lot better than having a bog standard V box.

Most TV don't auto switch to HDMI unfortunately.

Unfortunately, the V+ box does not have support for the HDMI-CEC standard, which would make things easier, and allow auto-switching to the V+ source. So, manual switching it is then.

Re: V+ hd
Personally i'd put it in '720 wide' as i find like alot of people that 1080 blurs the menus on the original V+, although i believe the new V+ Samsung box doesn't have this menu blur problem. I also can't tell any difference from 720 or a 1080i picture on my new Sony 1080p LCD via the V+.

I believe the BBC HD channel is broadcasting in 1080i on Virgin Media and SKY broadcasts their HD in 1080i!
