Opening .dbx files

My partner has recently upgraded my PC and transferred my Outlook Express files (including some folders I have set up which contain emails I need to get my mitts onto) to CD (I believe he just copied them over). However I can't open them. I am still using the same operating system (XP) and the same version of Outlook Express (v6). I have downloaded DBXtract (v4.50). The files appear to have been extracted however they aren't showing in the destination path I set up.

Does anyone know how I can get at these files?

Re: Opening .dbx files

I believe you put them in c:/Documents and Settings/USERNAME/Application Data/Microsoft/Outlook Express/ then restart OE.
I could be wrong though because I don't use that client.

Re: Opening .dbx files

This didn't work I had to use a slightly different path to get to the same point and I have now lost a few more emails, however they should still be on the cd so when I can recover the emails I should be okay.

Anyone with any more suggestions?

Re: Opening .dbx files

Ok Just so everyone knows what was done.

I copied the OE folder from the Identities area of "My Documents" to a CD, which I restored after the upgrade.

But it seems nort all files copied over to the cd.

Unfortunately part of the upgrade was a reformat and re-install of Windows so I suspect the emails are lost in the mists of time.

Re: Opening .dbx files

Well if inbox.dbx isn't there then the emails will be gone.

You didn't use the export tool in Outlook Express then? Oh dear
You should be able to drop the .dbx file back into the relative folder and then access the mail through OE etc.
Is this any help?

or maybe this might help you replace the files back to where they need to be

Re: Opening .dbx files

Thanks everyone for your help. After speaking to a friendly MCSE.
I now understand what was wrong.

The problem is that bryony's additional folder dbx files didn't copy to the cd before I reformatted. Therefore they are lost. The Inbox did copy and all files in the inbox were rescued. Now I've got to get her away from OE and onto a decent email proggy.

I think I might configure her mail to be picked up through my Linux box and get her using PINE. That should save similar problems in the future.
