Cancelling NTL phone but retaining Broadband?

Hi - I am considering switching my telephone line rental over to BT. This is because of:
  • the difficulties of accessing call routing services using NTL (i.e. long access numbers that mean the telephone number won't store in my telephone's memory, more expensive call charges when outsourcing from an NTL line, e.g. 18866)
  • the fact that in the Wessex area (BH10) where I live I have been waiting for Caller ID for 6 years with nothing as far as I can tell planned
For the moment, I am likely to want keep NTL Broadband, although with prices falling all the time meaning NTL doesn't seem to provide the best value for money anymore, I'm not sure how long that will last. (Are their better all round good value deals for someone like me who has < 3Gb per month requirement?)

My main questions though are:
  1. Can I cancel my NTL phone but retain NTL Broadband? (I do not use their TV service at all as I am on Sky).
  2. What period of notice is there to cancel?
Thanks in advance any feedback.

Re: Cancelling NTL phone but retaining Broadband?

1) As far as I know, you no longer have to have an ntl phoneline if you have ntl broadband, so you should be fine for that (although they do still have the stupid requirement that you must have an ntl phoneline if you want ntl CATV).

2) If it's the same as everything else, then you have to give 30 days notice of cancellation (unless you are still in the initial 12 month contract - in which case you can't cancel early. EDIT - ah, if you've been waiting for caller ID for 6 years, then you're obviously out of the 12 month contract! I should have read the post more fully)

If you do end up wanting to ditch ntl broadband, then have a look at some of the threads in here (or start your own):

Re: Cancelling NTL phone but retaining Broadband?

Thanks Matt for your feedback. It seems like the war for customers in telco and broadband is very fierce.

NTL (or C&W or Nynex before them) were very much pioneers in providing good value TV, telephone and internet services. Now though, they seem to be losing ground to other providers, particularly with telephone and internet. The thing is, as reported elsewhere, their customer service is often lacking too, so it's not that they are likely to retain customers that way either.

As I've said, I am seriously considering my options, and I imagine a lot of others are also.
