New User (Student) and Paying
Hi there.
I am considering purchasing the £49.99 3 in 1 package (with some optional extras i.e new box)..
We move into the new house on the 1st of September 2006. The current tennants I believe have NTL but I don't know when their contract expires. So my first question is if it doesnt expire till late september, can I still purchase a new one for that property?
My next questions is regarding installation. I'm currently down in Milton Keynes, but the house place is in Stafford. If i ring and enter stafford area code then 6 random digits, will I be able to order the NTL the week before and arrange for it to be installed PM on the day or day after I get there so i don't have to wait around ages?
From when it's ordered how long does it usually take before its all connected and installed anyway?
Finally, most important is payment. It'll be split between 4 people - does it have to be direct debit? Or can it be paid by cheque? If by cheque can it be by a few cheques from diff accounts or one cheque from one account? Does that account have to be registered i.e in the named person etc?
It looks like I'll have to put my name down on the NTL bill but i don't want my account being hassled. May set up another account simply for NTL bills!
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Also I noticed you can't do 9 month contracts.. only 12. What are my options after 9 months when i'll most prob be moving out?
Thank you

Re: New User (Student) and Paying
if there is already an active account at the address then really you cant have an account there. although as sales generally want your custom it can be worked around but the bill may be sent to "room1" your adress for example.
yep just as long as you get through to the right dept they will be able to take an order, although seeing as its a rented property you may have to have the landlords permission unless it is already at the house.
it depends on availability of installers how long it will take, shouldnt take more than a week, but they will also have to run a credit check, so id sugest calling plenty of time in advance.
you can pay the bill by seperate cheques, although from experience i would set up a "bills account" maybe with 2 of your housemates names on it to pay all bills, as when sending seperate cheques i found it rarely totalled to the correct amount then you get lumberd with late payment fees etc.
ntl do offer 9 month contracts, only to students though. usually you wouldnt be able to get this through sales, it would only be done by field sales agents who would come round the area or sometimes in the university around freshers week.
if your unable to get a 9 month contract you would have to pay a cessation charge for the remaining service charge for the contract unless you take it with you to your new adress.

Thank you for your help.
I do currently have the Landlords permission.
Can the installation date be specified on the website through sales as I am wanting to use Quidco for cash back? If not i'll just ring and sort it that way
Thanks

Re: New User (Student) and Paying
I just bought the contract through the website and used xx XXXX XXXX instead of xx Room 2 XXXX XXXXX lol.. stupid website!
All went through fine.. sed they'd send a welcome pack which i'll receive wen i move in on the 1st -- arranged for technician to come on the 1st in pm.. which is whne i'll be getting there!
Anything else I need to know as a new user?
I used my current student account for payment but will change it to a billing account me and my mates set up in september. Can this easily be changed?
Also I went for the full movies and sports package.. does this include Sky Sports Xtra? I was confused as it mentioned that as an additional service but not sure if included in that pack!
Thanks

Re: New User (Student) and Paying
Assuming you are a student: Make sure you actually have a student (9 months) account. It will probably not hurt to check this with NTL. Otherwise, you run the risk of them charging you for the full 12 months.

Re: New User (Student) and Paying
*swears*
How can I do it for 9 months? I didn't see an option and was forced to go for 12 months :|
Can I change that now do you think when the CS rep rings me to make sure everythings ok within 48 hours?
If not, can it be pasued/moved at the end of the year when I move out somewhere else with my girlfriend?
Thanks

Re: New User (Student) and Paying
id give CS a call just to make sure that it is a student acct. all they need to do is add it in the notes so when retentions look back they can see it is. they will need to put your student / nus number on there too,
as long as your new adress is servicable you can transfer FOC when you move out

Re: New User (Student) and Paying
They said they're gna call me within 48 hours when I made the order as that's how long it takes to process or something?
So I'll prob just wait till they call me and tell them then? I'll blag saying an NTL man said I could order then tell CS its a student account :p

Re: New User (Student) and Paying
Yeah because a field sales guy would really tell you to order online and not get him any commission?
As far as I am aware student 9 month contracts are only offered for a limited amount of time around Sept/Oct, and always by field sales, so you may or may not be able to get changed over onto a 9 month contract.

Two options, as far as I can see.
1. Call NTL and cancel your subscription. No install has taken place yet, so you can still cancel. You can then subscribe to a student account during freshers' week.
2. Leave it as it is. If £70 a month is too much when you move in with your gf, just drop sky sports/movies, and/or move to a tv/bb package that you can afford at that point in time.

Thank you.
I'll ring and try and change it tonight. If I can't then no worries I'll just have to get it transferred.
Can it be paused at all if it takes time moving house or whatever?

Re: New User (Student) and Paying
Shouldn't you be studying instead of worring about what's on TV??
